If you ever did decide to make up a list of all the places you have sampled the pork tenderloin, I'm sure many of us here, including me, would love to see it.

Not quite a list but I think I have posted just about every pork tenderloin review with pictures in the thread I did not even start...

http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=423

I've done the same with the walleye sandwich in a thread that I did start...

http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9729

I also keep my own web site photo gallery and blog on them.

In the future I kind of like the new Trips forum especially now that I have boosted my band width to see the many posted pictures. You might gather I am a picture guy.

The question. Do you only count those in a Stern's book or review here or do you count all places you consider roadfoad?

Davydd,

I count all the restaurants that have been reviewed here as well as the restaurants from the Roadfood books. The only ones I don't include are the restaurants posted for the first time on Roadfood as a result of a review that I completed (so far there are only 2)

BTW, thanks for the info on the Lake Superior Circle tour

WJ,

I think you should include your 2 as well. As one of the premier posters on this forum, I've followed some of your suggestions (most recently Ichiban in PB) and have to say you know what you are writing about. I trust your judgment.

Thanks for the compliment Tam,
however I want to thank the Sterns for writing about it in their Eat Your Way Across the USA book

Davydd,

Speaking of tenderloins,

I will be in Indianapolis over labor day weekend and will have time for one BPT. I can't get the photo of the BPT from Billy O'Neals out of my head so I guess that's where I'll be going!

I added two stops to my "Roadfood Places I have visited" list this week:

COFFEE AN, Westport, CT- I had some time to kill before a meeting in Darien, so I found this place using the maps feature that came with my new "Insider" membership. The coffee was just so-so, but the chocolate donuts were outstanding. Well worth the visit.

WESTFAIR FISH AND CHIPS, Westport, CT- I chose this place for a quick lunch over Swanky's because I had a lot of driving to do the rest of that day, and deep fried franks don't always sit so well. MAN OH MAN did I ever choose wrong. Everything at Westfair was tasty and seemingly fresh (I had a hot lobster roll and a small order of fried belly clams), but I got VERY, VERY sick later that night. Fresh shellfish is a bit of a crapshoot, and I understand that it's not possible for restaurants to find every bad clam, but BOY did I get a bad one. I have not been that sick in a long time. I'm not slamming Westfair Fish and Chips over this, but take if for what it's worth, I did get sick from their food.

Note: I was considering starting a new thread in the seafood forum to notify potential visitors to this place based on this negative experience, but I'm not sure that it's the proper thing to do, since it was an isolated incident. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Billy O'Neal's would be a great choice. Its location is not the greatest in a neighborhood strip center but it is definitely a neighborhood place and not a high-powered place to go place. There is a story behind the name. It used to be called Major Toohey's. A high school classmate of mine, Billy O'Neal, used to be a regular every day after work for many years. He was a great guy and a great athlete in his time as an Indiana All-Star high school basketball player and great running back on our undefeated football team. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago. In his honor the pub changed its name. It makes for a better Irish pub name as well.

I'm returning in at the end of this for the Brickyard 400 NASCAR race so hopefully will have a couple more to report on. Then I will be there again in October.

Crap! I own that book, just haven't read it in a while. Thanks for letting me know, I have to update my list now on this very thread!

Absolutely nothing to add to my measly list from 2005, except maybe three from different states I travelled through years and years ago that I forgot to put on the original post. I'm not even gonna bother. WJ is definitely the "go-to" guy for recommendations, and gives me inspiration, always giving me that "urge for goin'". Whoever said this thread was boring should have just clicked out; you saw the thread's title.

We just added Arthur Bryant's Kansas City

We also went to Gates Barbeque in Kansas City, which I notice, isn't among the Roadfood "chosen".

I'm having a difficult time tracking down the old posts for all who add places you visit on Roadfood. Rather than editing your old posts and adding a new place, couldn't you just do an update? Buffetbuster and Wanderjew, I'm talking to you guys in particular.

Zataar, any updates on my part are usually in "red" unless it's a "newly added to roadfood" restaurant which I previously visited, then it will be in "green"

I recently just took a hard look at my favorites (*) and dissapointments (?) and re-edited same, so nothing new on my part.

You are most likely thinking about Jack Pandl's Whitefish Bay Inn:

I sure wish there was a way to tweak out a full list.

Trying to remember each one individually, without prompts, is too frustrating.

Anybody got a full list to work with.

Sorry Gregg, there are just too many for me to have a complete list. Currently, there are 1,222 here on this site alone with well over a 1,000 (I'm guessing) that have appeared in JMS books not reviewed here. Fortunately, I started checking them off in my books early on.

I believe I have most, if not all of the Roadfood, Goodfood or Eat Your Way books. If I can help, please ask!

I was simply going to suggest using buffetbuster's, wanderingjew's, and maybe a few others' posted lists as a point of origin. I know that I have been to very few places that neither of those guys have! Also, I have a hard time remembering places that I went to before I got obsessive about taking pictures of food!

Okay now that he has updated again, I think we need clarification on this one.

Which place was it??

(Say WJ isn't Tadich a recent addition to RF? Or was it just recently a ROD??)

Tadich has recently added to the website but has been in the roadfood books for years.

I think Buffetbuster is referring to my " " on Harold's BBQ

I've been to about a fourth of the places initially mentioned and generally agree with your ratings, with the following exceptions-

Aunt Carrie's - Narragansett, RI - over rated (especially vs. Champlins)
Corky's - Brentwood, TN - very over rated - much prefer the dry rub style of Parkers, Wilbur's, etc
Dixie Crossroads- Titusville, FL - outstanding rock shrimp - a real treat
Southern Kitchen - New Market, VA - quite disappointed
Mary Mac's Tea Room - Atlanta - a must for southern style vegetables, etc
Iggy's Doughboys - Warwick, RI - OK for its location, but inferior to Buttonwoods Fish & Chips

A few you didn't mention & very worthy of a stop:

Wien-o-Rama - Cranston, RI - gold standard for NY systems
Ridgewood - gold standard for fresh cut fries (Al's French Fries in Burlington, VT runner up) & BBQ beans with excellent BBQ
Dixie BBQ - Johnston City, TN - Excellent BBQ
Five Island Lobster - Georgetown, ME - gold standard for lobster, fried clams & scenery
Cole Farms - Gray, ME - excellent local comfort food
Moody's - Waldoboro, ME - very good pies & local comfort food, especially breakfast
Red's Eats - Wiscasset, ME - gold standard for lobster roll
The Lobster Shack - Cape Elizabeth, ME - excellent seafood, & outstanding scenery
Kelly's Roast Beef - Revere, MA - excellent roast beef - on par with Beef Baron in Woonsocket RI
Harry's Drive-In - Colchester, CT - Muckies hotdogs, burgers, shakes & even fried clams are outstanding
Jerry's Pizza - Middletown, CT - best pizza outside of New Haven
Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale - Westbrook, CT - excellent fried seafood
Melear's - Fayetteville, GA - excellent BBQ, second only to the Red Pig - also in Fayetteville, GA
Polly's Pancake Parlor - Sugar Hill, NH - excellent Pancakes - on par with Audra's in East Greenwich, RI, Modern Diner in Pawtucket, RI and Breakfast Break in Clinton, CT
Cock Of The Walk - Natchez, MS - gold standard for catfish

mjambro,

I'm not sure whose list you're referring to since there are several lists on this thread.
If you're referring to mine, I only mentioned roadfood places listed on the website and in the book- therefore I didn't mention places like wienorama or al's french fry.
I didn't really rate Aunt Carrie's- although I can never get passed their clamcakes and "rhode island red" chowder (and no it's not Manhattan Clam Chowder)

I've been dissapointed with Iggy's the last couple of times I went.

and I still enjoy Olneyville NY System over Wienorama. (although I'll take a Detroit Style Coney over both anyday!)

@wanderingjew

Great work! I have always avoided this thread because I thought it was just brag lists (although there are some). Your notes on closed/disappointed/favorite are a help. Am I correct in understanding that your list is Roadfood.com restaurants only? BTW, when I first read of your dining experience on Bourbon Street, I guessed that it was Cajun Cabin. I had some great crawfish there in 1990.

@The Travelin Man:

Yours is a great list, too. Is your list solely from the web site, or does it include book-only restaurants? (or vice versa)

It's not a bragging list at all - to me it's a tracking list, however overall I think it's a list that illustrates what this website is all about.

I didn't mean "brag" in a negative sense, what I meant was that the lists with no critical notes are not particularly helpful to me. Yours is.

BTW, are you using the old books (pre-2005), too?

It's not a bragging list at all - to me it's a tracking list, however overall I think it's a list that illustrates what this website is all about.

I didn't mean "brag" in a negative sense, what I meant was that the lists with no critical notes are not particularly helpful to me. Yours is.

BTW, are you using the old books (pre-2005), too?

Absolutely,

Going back to 1987. In fact the older books (pre 2002) hold even more value in my opinion since it includes restaurants that unfortunately are no longer with us but had more "unique regionality" than some of the restaurants included in the newer books.

I think I counted (quickly, may be off a bit) 191 for myself. Granted, I've included any Stern recommended item from any of their books or this website, but that's a lot of good eatin'!

One of the first activities we do when planning a trip is to hit Roadfood and get some ideas of must-sees in the area. Who needs museums and tours when you can settle in for something yummy, local, and unique on vacation. Now there's something to write home about......having a great time, wish you were here eating with us! LOL

thats the place Buffetbuster- thanks- we were there around 18 yrs ago - my then 2 year old son pitched a fit and my wife and i took turns eating and taking him outside while the other ate too quickly- the sign clinched the memory- that son is now starting his 3rd yr At Univ of Florida(2nd generation GATOR)and would deny the story, but its a great roadfood memory.

the reason i like this thread so much is because -it recalls many fond memories some including good food and some not but all worthwhile. No boredom here.

This re-read made me want to update the list- i've added and missed many places.

I haven't kept track of all the places we have stopped that are or aren't on the Roadfood list... But I will complement the Stern's on encouraging us thru their writings, and more recently, their website and personal encounters, to take the time while we are on the road to explore some of the places we might have passed by in the past.

For years "Getting There" was our goal. We have logged several 3 day rides between Louisville and SoCal, with drive-thru's and FF as the 'nourishment' consummed.

Even our long Summer Roadtrips in the 90's (5 or 6 weeks each Summer) tended to be links between visits with family in varous parts of the country. Not any more. We tend to wander around and look at things that we find interest in as we go. Sometimes there is a reason...Sometimes none at all, but we love the more laid-back life-style we have found as we learn of "Roadfood" !

Well said Mayor Al, the Roadfood visits sometimes were destinations, sometimes excuses to go out of the way (Lamberts comes to mind) but
they were always shared with famuly and friends and made memories. Thanks Jane and Michael for the fun and great info!

BB - Not quite up to date yet...ah, the Wiener's Circle. The food was good to pretty good...the service and organization was a zero. There were 5 of us including two kids. We went for lunch on a beautiful Saturday in Chicago. The "line" is realatively small, perhaps 5-6 folks waiting. There were approximately 7 employees. There is no rhyme or reason to the ordering. It's a free-for-all. I must have repeated my order 6 or 7 times. Same for everyone. Nothing is written down, no lines so folks in back can yell out orders, no pick-up area, no payment area, everyone is going excuse me as they reach over and around...certainly the opposite of Portillos!

The food - I had a cheddar burger with everything, a char dog with cheddar and griled onions and fries. Other threads label the cheese as Merkt's. Several bags were squeezed out in front of me, none had a lable. I asked and got no where. The cheddar did not tatse the same as Paradise Pup.

Burger was cooked okay and with the condiments tasted pretty darn good. The dog was also pretty good. The fries were the best of the lot.

Perhaps one of the most disorganized places I have ever experienced.

CTD-
That is too bad about your experience at Wiener's Circle. There are many good places for dogs in Chicago to put up with that. I went there as part of the Roadfood bus tour in 2005 and they seemed to handle the large crowd rather well.

ChiTown,

Responding "on the road" from Omaha

I'm not "definite" on my other stops for Chicago yet but I'm definetely up for some company - I'm actually going to have a total of 3 stops- one being the Weiners Circle, I'm also going to do an Italian Beef stop (someplace other than Mr. Beef or Al's) and a Deep Dish Pizza stop (again something other than the obvious places mentioned time and time again) I know that Buddy Road House mentioned a place out in the Burbs which I'm considering and of course I'm open to any suggestions on an Italian Beef joint too!

I know everyone is all over the place on Italian beef places, but I have been a fan of Portillo's since the beginning days. A friend of mine was a Glen Ellyn cop at the time introduced me to them. It's a local chain all held within the family, the website below will give you locations around the Chicago area.

http://www.portillos.com/

BTW, you guys have been pretty quiet about your Omaha trip so far, should we worry?

No, just busy, no time to write.

I'm strictly relying on hotel computers since I don't own a laptop

Buffetbuster will complete the KC portion we'll most likely finish the remaining portion after we return from trip.

TTM does have a laptop so he may fill you in from time to time..

I'm tired [|)][|)]

Keep me posted on your travel dates. My email is checked regularly.

Buddy's pizza spot is pretty good and quite eclectic. Burt's Place is where Buddy hangs his hat on Saturday nights from October'ish through March'ish. Very good deep dish, funky set-up, trouble on Saturday nights.

For beefs, have you had Johnnies? - Great beef, pretty good fries, great lemon ice.

All of these lists are very impressive. I traveled for 20 years and have never kept a list. I should start, but could never catch up. I can not keep my expenses straight, so how could I list the places I have ate at. Good Job.

I have no idea how many roadfood joints I've been to. I started when I was a long-haul trucker in the early eighties with an old copy of roadfood. What I've learned is that I'd rather have a crappy burger like Dyer's with my friends, than have a great burger by myself. Thanks to all that I've dined with, and to those with whom I will dine in the future.

Well, the majority of these places I visited when gas was still under $1.50 a gallon. Remember THOSE days????

Great idea on the format for your list. Isn't there an icon better than very good for Charlie's Pool Room? If not, we should create one!

When I checked Posts Last Visited for this thread this 12/24/08 morning I saw that Buffetbuster was the last poster. Unfortunately, this thread does not work like the old forum. It gets confused if someone edits an old post. If you select First New Posts (the icon next to the thread title in the first column) it will take you to the first post in this six page thread. If you select Last Post (the icon that was next to Buffetbuster's name in the right column) it will take you to the last new post that was on 12/10/08 on the last page and not Buffetbuster's post that I think may be on the 3rd page.

wanderingjew - I am very impressed by your list ( and I'm also VERY envious - all those incredible meals! ) I bought my first "Roadfood" book in 1980, yet I've only been to about 45 "official" RF eateries. I've got to get on the ball and start doing something about that. Now that I'm retired, I'm finally in a position to start improving my list. I plan on joining you in Memphis and Greenville next month, so that should be a good start, huh?               Bob
