Harold's BBQ and Joe Roger's Chili Parlor are  so far the only two restaurants to earn a since they were  absolutely nauseating

I'll actually be in NC memorial day week, but I'm going to be in the Charlotte area. Won't know if I'll have time to make it to the eastern end of the state.

My first out-of-book Roadfood experience was when I detoured through Laurinburg, North Carolina in 1979 to eat lunch at Mrs. Forde's Coffee Shop. She was quite a character....
My most stellar one was eating at The Norske Nook in Osseo, Wisconsin in 1982... and eating... and eating... and eating.
And, hopefully, many, many more to come. Plus a plethora of tips to report when I am back on the road.

Good list. Interesting that there's only one entry from New Orleans. Must have been a very short trip. I think you can start to amend the list by going to the joint near your job that you mentioned never having gone to in another thread. Must be a story behind why you haven't been there.

I sat down awhile ago with all my different editions of Roadfood going back to the earliest editions and started counting places. Factoring in the website reviews, my total is over 300, a number which has been significantly beefed up by the inclusions on Roadfood.com, particularly those from states like Connecticut, where I spend a lot of time. In the coming months I'll be be making Roadfood pilgramages to New Orleans and Utah and am looking forward to chowing down.

I was in New Orleans once, in 1991, way before Roadfood dominated my travels. I remember going to a place on Bourbon (probably in the 200 or 300 block) which offered a shrimp creole/jambalaya/red beans and rice combo and I remember enjoying it. I couldn't even tell you the name of the place or if its still in business I wish I knew. Prices were relatively reasonable if I recall. I remember going to a pizza joint, I believe it was called Mama's on the fringes of the french quarter and had Gumbo which I also remember being very good. It was a relatively short trip. I went to Cafe Du Monde because my friend who went to Tulane University told me all about Beignets and Chickory Coffee.

As far as the Grove Diner in Warwick, they've changed names, possibly owners, it's now called Dinese's Diner. Don't know why I've never been there, perhaps I'll go today...

If I were to take out all my Roadfood books, my list would definetely grow. It would probably exceed 100. I believe I'm at 79 based on the current list.

My list, which I'm too lazy to type here, numbers 40. But, the majority are in and around NYC, with a healthy smattering around Western NY.

Just went to the Grove Diner for lunch, now known as Dinese's diner and revised my list accordingly. Had three loaded hot wieners and a side of onion rings. The onion rings were hot and fresh and were ok. Ever since I had onion rings on Ted's Red Hots in Buffalo, all other rings just don't compare. The hot wiener sauce was milder and meatier than most, it didn't have that pungent celery seed spice that most wiener sauces tend to have. Overall a fair experience. Apparently they have Fish n Chips and Chowder on Fridays. I'll have to go back on a friday to try it out. Today's special was the classic New England dish, American Chop Suey.

Just added Parker's to my list too. Apparently it was just reviewed today for the first time.

wanderingjew, I've seen you photo so I can ask, how come you don't weigh 850 pounds ? Even Michael Keaton would be pushing 350 with half your list.

Wanderingjew, what was disappointing about the Mug'n'Bun in Indy? I've never been there but I thought it looked good in the review here and the one on Hollyeats website. I was going to be driving through Indy next weekend and I had thought about stopping. I might re-think that now.

I'm 6'2" and 245 lbs. Isn't that bad enough??? Actually it's not too bad...My motto is moderation when you're at home and eat like a pig when you're on vacation or out of town!

It wasn't that it was dissappointing, the root beer was great, it's just that the tenderloin wasn't all that I thought it was cracked up to be. Maybe it's me. I'm going to give the tenderloin another chance later on this year in Iowa.

We have used the Stern's work and several other guides to help as we've wandered the country for the past 20+ years. Suffice it to say that we have a lengthy list. One place I miss that was in the first RoadFood Book is the Syringa Cafe on Rt 12 (in LoLo Pass) near Kooski Idaho. Lonely little place, but it was the ideal roadfood location as we climbed the Pass heading for Montana back in '84.
It's not the numbers that really count here...It's the memories!!

Oh yeah, In the same basic topic area. We visited ALL the WalMarts in North Dakota (8)in a 2-day circle of the State a few years back. Now there's a real claim to fame !!

Hatteras. Definitely go to Mug N Bun while passing thru Indy. Their root beer is very very good. Just have a little tenderloin, then head to Shapiros Deli downtown. I think their potato salad is outstanding.

Wow, what an interesting exercise this is. I just grabbed the closest copy of Roadfood, dating from 1992, and counted 95 of the listings that I've been to. Next exercise will be to find all the copies I have dating to the original and put them together in one place, and there's an updated version coming out soon.
