If they're still around, look for a Dairy Queen or, Carvel. I Grew up in NY with Carvel. I think it's the "original".

This link from Chowhound may help for Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Chowhound is a wonderful source for whatever you want in any part of the world. I'd research it more extensively there.

Hi Twin, I grew up with Carvel also in Bpt, Ct..........I wasn't sure if they were still around or even in the city. I see some of the ice cream shops sells frozen custard hard ice cream, but I'm looking for soft serve................BillyBoy talked about the Big Gay Ice Cream shop in NYC, But, I'm not sure if they serve Frozen Custard, I just sent them a e mail to see if they do. That place will be a eye opener to the family.............thx ....Bill

Philadelphia now has a Shake Shack in Center City. They sell genuine frozen custard. The location is 20th and Sansom Streets.
And this place, which is in a western suburb of Philly, sells tremendous custard: http://www.zwahlens.com/

There is also now a Freddy's Frozen custard in the suburb of Broomall. I've kind of fallen in love with this place, both for the burgers and custard.

As far as I know, Carvel is soft serve. But yes, More ice cream than "custard". See below.
Here's another one (Kohr's) that has many stores on the east coast selling
    frozen soft serve custard.

pnwchef, Shake Shack has some incredible frozen custard though I don't think it's soft serve.  They have a number of locations in NYC and definitely worth a stop!

Meadow's has shops throughout PA & MD http://www.meadowsfrozencustard.com/default.aspx
Jimmie Cone in Damascus, MD is a classic.
Kohrs has several shops over on the Eastern Shore if you make it that far.

We have a Rita's in Knoxville and we enjoy their custard and Italian ice.  Many flavors of each.  There are many in NY, PA and many other states.

Keep in mind that not all soft serve is frozen custard.  While ice cream has 10-18% butter fat, frozen custard has at least 10% butterfat with 1.4% egg yolk solids, but soft serve can have as little as 3-6% butter fat (ice milk, by definition has <10% butter fat fat).  DQ has 5% butterfat, so by definition, it is NOT frozen custard.

Furthermore, judging the way I have problems digesting DQ soft serve, I question if they include a lot of gums to make up for the reduced butterfat.

Echoing Twinwillow, I love Kohr Bros., too.

When I was growing up in Falls Church, VA (about 10 miles from DC) we went to a frozen custard place, that since then has gone through a few iterations (apparently now including pizza), but made good custard:

Another more recent addition, although farther out in the VA burbs, is Milwaukee Frozen Custard (yes--odd name for this area).  It's delicious and sensual custard.

Soft serve places calling their product custard is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. I also find that a lot of soft serve vanilla has almost no discernible vanilla flavor, including Dairy Queen's. That's not to say I refuse to eat the stuff. With toppings or mix-ins added, it can be an enjoyable treat (and not all soft serve is lacking in flavor ... they have pretty good vanilla soft serve at Citizen's Bank Park, where the Phillies play ... it's Turkey Hill I believe). But it's not comparable to real frozen custard.

I second Milwaukee Frozen Custard as having excellent custard products.  When our son was living in Reston, we'd always make a stop at the Herndon location for a real treat.  Odd name considering they are VA based, but I suppose they wanted to capitalize on the fact that Milwaukee is known for excellent custard shops.
