Look closely at the text under each flavor ... you can click on the picture to see it larger.

Is it possible the soda was sold via vending machines at HJ locations?  For some reason I have a very faint, very vague memory of that...

That would make sense re the vending machines at the HJ motels.

It looks like they don't have a pop-top, so you'd need a church key to open them....might be a clue as to the date.

Maybe the logo can give a hint to it's vintage.

I do remember "HoJo Cola" when we ate in the restaurants.  I didn't like it.

I worked for Howard Johnsons in Mass (on I-95) from 1963-67. During that time we switched from Coke to the HOJO brand Cola, for fountain use.  At the time, we decided they called it HOJO Cola because they couldn't spell "YUCK" on the can. It had a Horrible flavor and was not popular at all with our customers.  I do not recall the canned soda being stocked in our restaurant, although we had a display of canned goods...Chowder, Welch Rarebit, and other soups... no soda.

They had a TV commercial in the 60s/early 70s, apparently.  Their tag line was "For people under 21."  I guess they were going for the hip-swinging younger demographic.

I do remember Howard Johnson's soda from the 1960's, but can't give the exact years it was available in NYC. It was cheap and sold in some supermarkets as well as at beer and soda distributors; they were plentiful then. I would buy the cream soda. The cola tasted like shoe polish. I don't know who produced it. HoJo still had their huge commissary in Hollis back then. There were also a lot of independent bottlers such as Kirsch, Cornell, Cott, Hammer, Minck, Mission, Hoffman, Dr. Brown's, White Rock, and Mission who could have produced it.

It hasn't been available for decades. Will probably never be resurrected again, either.
