Calzones!

I love a good pizza, but one thing I love just as much - well, maybe almost as much - is a good calzone.  (I figured this would be appropriate in the pizza forum, since pizza joints are basically the only places to get calzones.)

Until I moved here, my idea of a calzone was shaped by the Midwestern grocery store chain Hy-Vee.  They sell house-brand, prepackaged calzones.  They're decently sized, but not huge, and there's always marinara sauce on the inside.  And at the stores I went to, they were inconsistent in whether they also provided a cup of marinara for dipping.

Well, turns out I didn't know what a calzone really was, I guess.  One of the first I tried here was from a little place called Zerio's, in Cromwell.  This thing was bigger than my head:

I only specified cheese and sausage, and it came to me with sausage, ricotta, and mozzarella.  I should have cut further toward the center for this pic, to show just how thick this bastard was, but this will have to do:

Another I tried was from "Wooster St. Pizza" just down the street (Hwy 372 / Berlin Rd); I put the name in quotes because it's not a genuine Randy's Wooster Street, but apparently it used to be one before it changed ownership and they had to remove the name.  This one didn't impress me nearly as much:

There was no ricotta, and the crust didn't seem appropriate for a calzone:

I've been distracted by pizza lately, but I need to get around to trying calzones at those places as well.

Anyway.  Calzones!

Calzones are a nice change of pace and around here the local chain Glass Nickel does a good job.

When I was in school in Des Moines the pizza chain Paul Revere's had the "wedgie", which was similar to a calzone in shape only.  Basically it was a 12" pizza crust folded in half and then filled to order.

I've had those!  There used to be a Paul Revere's in Iowa City where I went to college.  I remember a chicken cordon bleu one, and a chicken parmesan one.  I think there were one or two others, but I can't remember.

I'm originally from NY and I know a great calzone when I eat one.
The very best calzones I've ever had were in Austin, Texas at 360 Pizza.

There used to be a pizza place in the Times Square area of New York City that was pretty much just a kitchen and a counter on the street side; no customers on the inside. This is where I was introduced to calzones. They served fried calzone, with about a dozen different fillings (my favorites were cheese, meatball, sausage, eggplant, ham, and lasagna, not all at the same time). Outside counter service used to be pretty common in places in New York; I have not seen it for a while. Either it's not profitable or the Board of Health people, infamous for their need to compensate for anatomical inadequacies, made them illegal.

I usually get the same thing, but with fresh tomato also, and extra marinara for dipping.

We used to go to Pizza Masters (or Blimpie) after school every day!!

That calzone is from Mona Lisa. It used to be called Pizza Bistro many years ago. I never really liked their pizza....but they do a fine job with deep-fried calzones (as long as you request it fried hard! fried hard! fried hard!)...and they have outstanding zeppoles.

I haven't been to Pizza Masters in some time. I need to go soon for a pepperoni roll & Caesar salad!

I'm going through Bayonne a couple of times a week lately; I will have to look it up.

Mona Lisa is on Broadway @ 5th Street.

The Fifth Street Deli-Ette is across the street...and it's an old-school German Deli that has delicious offerings. Unchanged since I don't know. It's been exactly the same my entire life. People come from miles for the potato salad macaroni salad & cole slaw. Roasting done daily turkey - roast beef - roast pork. Great fish cakes & potato pancakes every Friday.

    Closed Monday & Tuesday.

I had an amazing calzone last night - so much cheese and mushrooms. I'm drooling just thinking about it, haha! Forgotten the place name, but I'm definitely going to have to go there again.

Yep, 360 and Reale's offer excellent calzones. Sadly I reside in the land of the bland north of Austin and the closest they come to a decent calzone is an outfit supposedly out of NY called Yaghi's.

Here  in Waukesha we have what is called a Ponzerata. Deep fried calzone at its best.
