There has been a Orange Julius in Knoxville ever since I was a child.  It was one of my favorite drinks.  I had one about a year ago and it still tasted as smooth as it did the first time I ever tried it.  They have had various locations in Knoxville and the first one I remember was downtown.  I seem to recall several years ago they  sold small dip dogs and hot dogs and maybe hot roasted peanuts.  They don't do that now.

Dairy Queen bought them some time ago and that improved their visibility.  The company originally started in 1920.

It's pretty easy to make Orange Julius. It's orange juice, ice, simple syrup, and instant vanilla pudding, all in the blender. Trying to remember the measurements: for a 1 quart blender, fill it about 3/4 the way with ice, add enough orange juice to fill it about halfway up the ice, a couple of tablespoons of simple syrup, and one heaping teaspoon of the instant vanilla pudding. I THINK there was some water in there, too.

Thought there was a bunch of confectioners sugar in it.

My memory could be wrong; it's been a number of years since I made it last. I thought that the added sweetness was entirely from the simple syrup. Confectioner's sugar, which contains some flour, would add some thickness to the mixture, though.

I looked at several copy cat recipes and they all are about the same.  I always though that they used malt but none of the recipes include that.  Pretty simple.  I do not know about the egg white?  The only thing I ever saw them add was powder and ice?  None of the recipes contain confectioner sugar.

The last one I had was 40 years ago. I saw they were using a powder like Tang instead of OJ.

The last one I had I saw them squeezing the oranges along with a powder substance.  I know that I enjoyed it then.  I do not know about now.

I had one about 6 months ago and unlike most things it tasted the same to me as the ones many decades ago.

Top Secret Recipes specializes in creating taste-alikes using relatively high quality ingredients. Note that instant vanilla pudding has the egg white and the vanilla in it, and the simple syrup makes up for the sugar.

I can't say whether the DQ one is like the old one, as I haven't tried the old one, but I'm definitely a fan of DQ's.

I don't think the new ones taste as good, but they're good enough for a few minutes of nostalgia.

I remember drinking and enjoying Orange Julius growing up in NYC but, there is no such thing as an Orange Julius here in Dallas.
