Biscuits or Toast - Thu, 05/30/13 4:58 PM

The main trouble with the poll, for me, is that there are lots of places where the biscuits are just plain lousy. If they aren't good I'll get toast. I'll also take toast over biscuits if I'm having over easy eggs. Dunking a biscuit in the yolk just doesn't get it done.

Dunking a biscuit in your egg yolk means a good chance of having yellow stuff on your chest, sort of ruining -- at least for the day -- your shirt.

Both Michael and pnwchef, PM'd me, saying biscuits make them angry and they needed to talk to someone about it. I'm glad this poll came up, both gotta be feeling much better now!

Chewy, this must be an important matter, I mean it's a poll on the front page of a Food site. These things have to be aired out, just like a sleeping bag needs airing out after a camping trip of eating baked beans...............I mean if Michael thinks it's important, I bet it has reached Disneyland by now.........If thats not Goofy, nothing is..............pnwc

Michael, If you have to eat Biscuits with your eggs, wear the jacket that has the mustard stains on it from the Friday night football games. No one will notice, except Lisa and she already expects it of you anyway. Chewy told me that in his PM................pnwc

My wife makes damn good biscuits (or use to); but I like TOAST!  ... Few restaurants could even match her biscuits; but I like TOAST and I have gotten strange looks from waitress when I ask for TOAST instead of biscuits.

I still think of the biscuits with tomato gravy some of us had at the Coffee Cup in Pensacola on the 2013 Glee Club Mobile trip. They were awesome!

Gentlemen, Gentlemen, Gentlemen!
You OBVIOUSLY have not mastered the art of eating your eggs with your biscuits.
It's simple.
  1. First, you need to start with FRESH Extra Large Eggs cooked over easy so you have plenty of Yolk to work with.
  2. Good quality biscuits are a + but not required since the Yolk will compensate for less than perfect biscuits.
  3. Next, GENTLY break the surface of the yolk but not enough so it runs all over.
  4. Next, split your biscuit using your fork.
  5. Then cut a biscuit half in quarters.
  6. Then flip a biscuit quarter on top of the Yolk so that the open side of the biscuit, not the crust side, is emersed in the center of the yolk.
  7. Let the biscuit sit a little bit so it absorbs the Golden Yolk goodness.
  8. Stick a fork in the biscuit, lift it to your waiting lips, open your biscuit hole and enjoy
  9. Repeat as necessary until all the Golden Goodness is embedded in the the biscuits and then devouer the rest of the egg using any leftover biscuit as a pusher.
  10. No extra charge for my years of Biscuit/Egg Eating Wisdom!

Tomato gravy goes on pancakes;   good biscuits is for sausage gravy & syrup!    ... Buttered Toast if for Mahaw jelly, well sometimes strawberry jelly; or sopping the last of the runny eggs from the plate.

Normally I agree with you (although I also like honey and biscuits) but several of us tried the Coffee Cup's biscuits with a tomato cream gravy and it was really good as wells being a unique way to serve the biscuits. If you're ever in Pensacola check it out. Otherwise, Biscuit King in Fairhope, AL makes a mighty good biscuit with sausage gravy.

There seems to be 3 members here in basic agreement about biscuits & toast.    ... but, I might add, poor biscuits (no so good kind, which is most) is for the Dogs.  He has to eat too.

Edsails: thanks for mentioning this place, as I had never heard of tomato gravey on biscuits, and once I read the roadfood piece on the Coffee Cup in Pensacola, realized I had never heard of nassau grits either

Here and I thought I had read it all at this point, having been on roadfood for over 10 years now :-)

SOS - gotta be toast
Over Easy Egg - Gotta Be Toast
gravy - gotta be biscuit
butter and jelly - toast
honey or syrup - biscuit
ham and fried egg - gotta be biscuit
moms fried chicken and homemade chicken gravy - biscuits only

as for the current poll

Why just eat one breakfast, skip the hotel breakfast and eat 3 or 4 in town.

As I've mentioned, having lived in P'cola, it's the only place I've ever seen that has Nassau Grits and tomato gravy on a menu
I tink they use the tomato gravy as the base to make the sauce that goes into the Nassau Grits.

100% agree Ed.  Those were terrific!

If I am in the South, it will always be biscuits.  Elsewhere, it will most likely be toast.

Grilled Biscuits, I've run into this twice in the last couple of months. Tastes OK but doesn't seem right. Waffle House did it to my sausage biscuits and so did a local diner.  Noticeably brown on the bottom.

Grilled biscuits??   ... is that the same as 'butter toasted' biscuits?   My Mom made these when I was little.  It was a good way to fresh up 1 or 2 day old biscuits and they were GREAT!   ... Toast!

The grilled biscuits I had at Hathaway's Coffee Shop in Cincinnati some years ago appeared to be biscuit dough cooked on the grill, not rewarmed baked biscuits.
They were interesting.  http://www.roadfood.com/R.../hathaways-coffee-shop

I agree with the comments above about the North/South divide.  In the South, I'd always pick biscuits over toast.  But I've had some bad experiences with leaden biscuits in other parts of the country (some of the worst ever were at a place in Montana), so unless I've been able to establish that the biscuits will be fresh, good and homemade (and they are, in some places outside of the South),  I'll opt for toast.

The grilled biscuit I was speaking of consisted of regular biscuits split and covered with whatever spread Waffle House uses and put on the flattop cut side down until browned. The local diner did the same sans the spread.

Around here Waffle House takes the pre-baked biscuits (they come in already baked) and splits them. Then when there's an order the split biscuits are removed from their container and placed, split side down, on the flattop and grilled till browned. This is what they do whether for a sandwich, for topping with sausage gravy or chili, or for serving with butter.

I have to admit to a liking for a grilled split biscuit...or a twice-sliced bagel grilled.  even an English Muffin! At Home I make a "sausage slider" that consists of a potato roll, cut and grilled, topped with a piece of grilled summer sausage and a type of cheese ( I prefer something exotic), melted.  no egg

I'm allergic to eggs, so none for me either, I'll get hash or extra home fries/hash browns. Good biscuits are hard to find at restaurants around here (usually pre-baked and not heated back up) so I go for toast. Rye if they have it.
