City-inspired ice cream flavors Sun, 06/9/13 9:23 AM (permalink)
Apparently Ben & Jerry's recently launched a campaign to get the public to recommend ice cream flavors inspired by certain cities, such as New York, Portland, San Francisco, etc., and I thought this might be a fun topic for us to play with.

What flavor(s) would you choose to represent your city or any of the major cities you've visited?

Birch beer is a very popular carbonated drink in our area so I think a birch beer flavored ice cream with chunks of funnel cake would be luscious and represent the PA dutch flavors of Reading or Lancaster PA.

The places that make their own ice cream around here always have teaberry on the menu. That might be a good flavor for a revival.

Ralph's Famous Italian Ices (a Staten Island original) has both pistachio & cannoli flavors in the Creme Ice section.

      Together they combine to represent...

An oatmeal-flavored ice cream would represent Cedar Rapids, Iowa well, as anyone who's been in the area when the wind's blowing just so will attest.

Hudsonville Ice Cream (made about 45 minutes west of me on Lake Michigan) already has several flavours that represent Michigan cities...Grand Traverse Bay Cherry Fudge (cherries with fudge ripple in vanilla), Mackinac Island Fudge (chunks of fudge and butter fudge swirls in vanilla), Michigan Deer Traxx (peanut butter cups and chocolate fudge in vanilla), Sleeping Bear Dunes Hug (chocolate-covered cashews with fudge swirls in chocolate) that are available all the time. They also have a couple of limited edition flavours...Lake Affection (blue mint ice cream swirled with vanilla) and Pure Michigan Caramel Apple (apple ice cream with chunks of Michigan apples and caramel).

If I had to pick something from the Grand Rapids area specifically, it would have to be something with ripples (our name comes from the Grand River, which flows through the center of the city). There isn't really a flavour specific to here that is unique from anywhere else in the state, though.

Nobody would vote against The Big Big Bang ice cream. Even if they did...the votes wouldn't count.

Yesterday we drove up to Utica, Ohio for a visit to Velvet Ice Cream. lleechef had a single scoop of Praline Pecan ice cream on a waffle cone and I had a double scoop of sea salt caramel ice cream on a sugar cone.

These are great!!  Keep em coming.

I love the birch beer, pistachio & cannoli, Michigan themes, ripples, oatmeal (cookie dough?) and Columbus sea salt--hahahaa

Big Big Bang--what would be in it, CC?

Mar, you've absolutely outdone yourself--I literally laughed out loud.   And congrats on winning the Dreyer's contest!!  Did they ever produce that?

                            Mmmmm... Graeter's.

Mmmmm again--praline pecan is one of my all time favorites.

There are many flavors that could fit San Francisco, one of which could be Stone(d)fruit.  Or Fruitcake for all the crazies here.

love2bake,  My Dreyers flavor was an almond base with burnt almonds and pieces of See's marzipan candy throughout.

A few months later they came out with an almond ice cream... no pieces of anything and not enough almond flavor. It didn't stay long.

For my Rogue Valley, I'd combine pears and wine in a nifty sorbet,
and a Blue Cheese and Chocolate Swirl Vanilla with Hazelnuts for the ice cream.
That covers our major food groups, unless I can devise a Pot ice cream.
                                      Available in ounce containers. :)

The NYC-based chain, Shake Shack, has a number of "concrete" flavors as a tribute to the neighborhoods that they are in.  The Theater District location has Broadway themed ones such as Pretzel! The Concrete, Jelly's Last Donut and Great White Way flavors.  And proceeds from some of the concretes help fund local programs in the community.  The Brooklyn location has Fudge-eddaboutit.  The new Boston location has a Lobstah Shell concrete with pieces of lobster tail pastry from the North End in it.

Or perhaps City Bakery can slice one of their salty Pretzel Croissants in half, pair it up with some Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory or Ample Hills ice cream and make an ice cream sandwich with it!

I'd love to see an ice cream with pieces of Sfogliatelle Italian pastry in it!

For my home region of Central NY, I think a chocolate-vanilla swirl ice cream with pieces of half moon cookies in it would be divine!

OOH, OOH, Turkey Joint ice cream!!!!  What are Turkey Joints, you ask?  A chocolate and brazil nut "bone marrow" center that is enrobed in a shiny and crunchy sugar "bone" outer shell.

And maybe even a dark chocolate ice cream with a coconut custard pusty mashed up in it for an "Almond Joy" of sorts!

I vote for Turkey Joints! I'll drink to Jelly's Last Donut.

I won't get a call from the Mob Wives...since they apparently situated Manhattan Newark & the Statue of Liberty to their liking (for the opening)...and eliminated Bayonne in the process.

                                                  So bring it...Big Ang!

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams makes delightful ice cream sandwiches (including macaron) that are a tad spendy...but now that I'm no longer here...there won't be a bill...

It's locked in the trunk right now but I'll check ASAP...

Okay--I'm inspired on the Mob Wives ice cream.

First, BIG marshmallows in there, and maybe caramel ice cream for the fake tans.  Candy high heel stilettos and rock candy.

You need the caramel to be a spray mist!

                                                        Keep sprayin' it! Don't stop!

If you dare let the vanilla show...you're marshmallows are toasted like Mary Tyler S'mores!

You also have to leave the marshmallows on the counter long enough to make them so hard...a quarter will ricochet off 'em with so much force...it will shatter a pane of glass.
