We'll be there for the weekend. Any suggestions as to unusual places to eat (I'm from NYC so looking for quirky places that we might not find here)? Don't want to spend a fortune, atmosphere and good desserts are important. Thanks!

A couple of non-touristy spots include: Kane's Doughnuts 120 Lincoln Avenue, Saugus, Massachusetts 781 / 233-8499 (To-die-for, homemade doughnuts including cinammon rolls bigger than your head. Arrive early or leave surly.) The Kernwood 55 Salem Street, Lynnfield, Massachusetts 781 / 245-4011 (Classic American / continental cuisine with scrumptious popovers.) Naked Fish 215 Broadway (Route 1), Lynnfield, Massachusetts 781 / 586-8300 (Typical oversized Route 1 restaurant but superb seafood.) Porthole Pub 98 Lynnway, Lynn, Massachusetts 781 / 595-7733 (Don't let the armpit that is Lynn fool you. There's great seafood here.) There are plenty of other choices around but these four are local favorites and collectively don't likely have a web page between them. Also, don't rule out the ubiquitous Hilltop Steakhouse. Yes, it's better days may be behind it and it is a classic tourist trap but I find it's fare consistently very good. FYI.

hafta disagree there on the Naked Fish rec. it is a subpar mini chain of restaurants, hardly a local favorite here. For seafood, I would try: East Coast grill - cambridge Blackfin chop house - back bay Jasper White's Summer Shack - Alewife (cambridge) Great Bay - near fenway in Kenmore Square Also, you gotta go to Essex/Ipswich and get some fried clams from the Clam box, Woodman's or Farnhams.

Here, therefore, is the ultimate question for you, IansMom: Have you and or your father ever had your car stolen in Lynn ? (Answer me first and I'll tell you why I'm inquiring about such. )

It's more of a set-up question, IansMom, sorry, as for years, Lynn was known as the "stolen car capital of the U.S." based on per capita statistics. A lovely stat no doubt giving the Lynn Chamber of Commerce all kinds of challenges. "Welcome to: L Lojack Y Your N Nissan N NOW !!!"

I have heard good things about the Capitol Diner in Lynn, but I have never eaten there. Rt. 1 in Saugus: I95 forgot about Kelly's Roast Beef http://www.kellysroastbeef.com at the infamous intersection soon to be the home of Krispy Kreme (now Russo's) leechef forgot about the second home of The Daily Catch http://www.dailycatch.com on Rt 1 north in Saugus, a place she highly recommends for seafood. The Kowloon restaurant is an enormous asian restaurant-all styles-frequented by many local celebs and athletes-a favorite of the WWE wrestling superstars. DaveM

Allow me to use this venue to confess my deepest, darkest sin that being that -- in flying into Boston this Thursday to attend a family funeral -- that my flight's arrival time was specifically chosen to fit in a pre-service stop here: Praise the lard, er...Lord.

Sorry for your loss or gain how ever you look at it. Great spot, I get by there often but I'm afaid to stop for obvious reasons. We have Marty's in my neighborhood, equally as good. And I don't stop there either. The Kernwood, say a little prayer at the services for that once great institution. Damn, I miss that spot. Chow Jim

I agree with everything stated here and would only add All Star Sandwich Bar in Cambridge (although quirky, it is not really New England specific if that is a key criterion). That East Coast Grill is fantastic.

Turner's Seafood in Melrose is my favorite seafood restaurant in the Boston area. Nick's roast beef in Beverly is great, and so is Mimi's roast beef in Malden. Dom's sausage company/deli in Malden is great as well.

I know I did yesterday about 8:30 am. And in addition to enjoying Kane's simply delectable crullers on-site, I also brought a dozen home. These things are so popular that I was taken back at the crowd reaction at Logan Airport as I walked to my gate later that day and the crowds at the airport saw the Kane's box I was carrying. Here, I even took a picture of said crowd's rception as I walked by with a box of crullers: Kane's. Gotta love it.

(Kane's again) I went back today. They had been on the Phantom Gourmet and on TWO local tv stations this week - one of those on the day I went.... so needless to say there wasn't a ton of choice.... did I care? Nope. I got another FABULOUS donut. And I bought a coffee roll (yes i95, I did I did). My roommate was floored. (And it's really good.) I took the camera. Will post pics later!

Note: The Kernwood is closed & has been closed for a few years. The Newbridge Cafe in Salem is a pretty good spot for Mexican. I prefer the Magnolia location, but I live closer to Salem. Nicks Roast Beeef in Beverly should be on your list. Farnhams for fried clams / fish is tough to beat as well. If you are going to fly from NY try to get to Santarpios in East Boston, right near the airport near Maverick Square (reviewed on Roadfood). Polcaris / Regina (Rte 1 North in Saugus) has good pizza...not as good as the N. End original location, but still pretty good. Kellys Roast Beef is tough to beat on a nice day.... Have fun in Boston....

Oh i95 you don't know the half of it... Two or three local channels featured donut stories about Kane's, one was done the day you were going there (did you see tv crews??). And the Phantom Gourmet apparently did a spot on 'em recently too. I am such an addict now! JUST this morning I went in for a box of 12 to share with my fellow teachers at our morning meeting today. They were WELL appreciated. (When I said last week that I would bring in the best donuts in the world one person chimed in: "Are they Kane's?!") Yum Yum Yum. The less crowd, the more donuts for me. And those coffee rolls are heavenly!

...and so is Saugus, Massachusett's beloved Kane's Donuts. I had the good fortune of returning there yesterday (yes ) and they have just broken ground to their immediate right for an expansion. Cue the music.
