Roadfoodin' with Vince - Tue, 06/25/13 2:54 PM
0

I saw this image at Packerville, U.S.A. and marveled at the combination of two of my passions. Imagine sitting at a lunch counter with Lombardi on your left and buffetbuster on your right debating the best defense against the Packers' sweep and whether to get the Coconut Cream or Dutch Apple Pie (trick questions, the Packers' sweep could not be stopped and you will order both of the pies). The above photo was for a 1960 LOOK magazine article on the Packers (larger image here, click it to enbiggen).

Sneezer's Snack Shop has been long gone, but its location on Ashland Avenue near City Stadium made it a regular stop for Lombardi's breakfasts. Collectable ashtrays from Sneezer's are still available at a steep price.

Anyone have other pictures of sports stars or celebrities at Roadfood-type restaurants?

Roadfooding isn't everything, it's the only thing!

Vince definitely comes across as a Roadfood kind of guy.  I could definitely see him sitting at the counter of Chili John's.  And yes, a slice of each would be the correct answer!

That  may be one of the earliest pictures of buffetbuster sitting to Vince's right.  While partially obscured, I still detect the resemblance.

Look closely...............that is not Buffetbuster.  The man in photo is drinking coffee.  Buffetbuster would be drinking a milkshake!  I think it is WJ, and that he is not pleased with the coffee.

There are two people there to the right of Vince. It could be both Buffetbuster and wanderingjew.

Who cares? Vince never should have left his coaching job with the Giants. He'd have been the next head coach. And then we'd have had even more good years and Super Bowl championships.

Michael,

Don't you mean Tom Landry?  Your Giants struck out twice in a row.

Jim

Nope. Landry was a great defensive back and a terrific defensive backs coach. But he'd never have done as well with the Giants as he was able to do with Dallas. That's because in Dallas he was the law when it came to Cowboys football. That wouldn't have been allowed by the Maras. Lombardi would have been able to handle things with the Maras.

I like to think.

What gorgeous B&W photo!  Really captures the era, the man, and most importantly, the diner.

I would have liked for the photographer to have shifted the camera to the right a foot to catch those menu prices that were cut off.

I agree Davydd. I like that "Big Boy" was a generic term at that time.

I'm sure at least a few of the people at my employer's Green Bay store remember Sneezer's so I'll see if any of them have any interesting stories.

As long as we're hanging with Vince, how about a refreshing bubbly soft drink after the hard fought game?
