Uses for strawberry sauce? - Fri, 07/5/13 3:07 PM

My daughter in law made three batches of strawberry jam  that ,somehow, turned into strawberry sauce.  It really does taste good but the kids do not want it on their ice cream  or pancakes or waffles.  Does anyone have any ideas on how we can use this stuff up?

I tried that.  The fact that she was making it with her mom, and they were chit chatting away, indicates to me that they were not measuring carefully, which does not go over when making jams and jellies.

Some good suggestions............they would never go for the angel food cake.  They really dislike it and call it "Useless fluff"

The rest I will try.  I will have to look up recipes for sorbet.  Thanks, Mar!

With 21 pints of the stuff, I need lots of help!

Add a couple of tablespoons to lemonade for strawberry lemonade (also good with vodka ), instead of pouring it over waffles or pancakes mix some into the batter, you might be able to freeze it into popsicles, mix some into applesauce, use it in place of applesauce in muffins...I'll try to think of some more. We used to have a bajillion jars of strawberry sauce every year from the garden.

Topping for ice cream, marinade for ham, crock pot with sausage, use on waffles and pancakes and whatever works for you.  Mamaw Smith makes a freezer strawberry jam and it is double outstanding.  I consume way too much of it.  I bought her about 7 pounds of strawberries last week and she did the freezer jam.  She used pectin to make and develop structure.

Oh, just a thought, maybe mix a teaspoon into a glass of champagne?

I used to love raspberry sauce with pork tenderloin. Try that!

A small amount of fruit jam or jelly in a stewed meat dish can give a nice bit of sweetness and pungency to the recipe. Try it out with Swiss Steaks (sort of a mini-pot roast made with top round or chuck medallions, sometimes called "sandwich steaks", made in a frying pan). It's usually done with one that has a degree of pungency (Ed just mentioned raspberry), but strawberry may just work out. Especially with a more strongly flavored meat, like lamb or venison.

Thank you very much for all the ideas.  Last night I made crepes filled with orange flavored ricotta and topped with the sauce.  Today, I made a fresh peach pie and put the strawberry sauce in it.  Instead of adding sugar, I just put in a little extra cornstarchr to thicken it.  It looks beautiful!

This week I will do pork tenderloin slices with the sauce to which I will add balsamic vinegar.

I would not dare put it in a dish with venison, as my family loves the way I do roasts and stews now.  They would not like it if I changed my recipes for either of these.

Any more ideas?  Let me know.  I have lots of this to use!

How about freezing it in the freezer jam plastic containers, then you could store it longer and give some away later this year when strawberries arent so plentiful.

other than that:

Buttermilk pancakes are yummy with strawberry sauce so are waffles.
pound cake is a good way to use up some too, you said your family didnt like angel food so try pound cake instead.

Cheesecake
Smoothies

Or for something different

Pulled Pork with Strawberry BBQ sauce

slow cook the boston butt in a crock pot until fall apart tender
for the sauce combine strawberry sauce, a little ketchup, some garlic, a little rosemary, some vinegar, a dash or two of hot sauce
heat through, put in blender to remove and strawberry chunks, return to sauce pot and heat to thicken slightly.

take the pork out and shred it into the sauce, mix to combine well and serve.

sort of a cross between sweet & sour and bbq

slice some fresh strawberries into it and spoon it over slices of pound cake -  a version of strawberry shortcake, and of course whipped cream and a cherry on top

The first thing that comes to mind for kid food would be to use part of the strawberry sauce as the liquid for making Jell-O jigglers. I'd use raspberry jello, though, because I think strawberry jello would give too strong a strawberry flavor.
