How long to stay at a bad spot???? - Wed, 07/10/13 10:43 AM

I have 2 spots one I sold a whopping $45 in a weekend & got chewed out by some old guy that $3.50 for a 1/4 lbs hot dog was too much and I am taking advantage of people even though I cheaper than other carts in the area selling smaller dogs for $4.00.  I politely told him if your trying to save a buck maybe Circle K Hot Dogs would be better.  The other averages $45 a day. One day I sold $100 but I was set up from 10am-6pm tried that a few times never made it back to $100 I have been there for a month.  I did skip a few days and people did ask me when I am here and I was going to stop by but it is only a few folks.  Both spots are free rent I hate to pass that up, but it sometimes ice, gas, and taxed take up everything and I end up buying dogs out of my own pocket and I don't want to do that any more. So how long do you hold out to see if a spot is worth while? Thanks for your help guys.

As long as you can hang on. Sometimes, it will be a bit to establish yourself. Remember you cannot please everybody. Are old people your target clients? If not, dont worry about it.

Taking advantage? His choice to buy or not. You don't need him back.
Can you see potential in these spots? Are you getting repeat customers? Do you have a loyalty card? Are you at these same spots the same days so they know you will be there? Do you have an option for a third spot?
It takes time, but if your food is good they will come back and spread the word.

it's hard to say, people have to know you are there. unless you know a sure fire spot, stay there.
that person would love it here in vegas, were the casinos have a 4 for 1,00 beak and snout dog.

Chris,  Do you have any bars in your area? Are you allowed to operate at night? I just started a few months ago but I can't financially go full time so I've been rolling up to a night spot outside the bars. There's 3-4 other food spots open late but I roll up around 10-1030 and am packing it up by 145am. I've been doing around 250 a night in sales average.

You should have a pretty good feeling for the spot after 3 consistent weeks. Make sure there are no reasons for uncharacteristic sales, high or low, such as weather, holiday weekend, everyone is over at the nude hoedown event across town. How loyal do some of these repeat customers seem, can you get them to go over to your next trial location.

You say you have 2 spots. Are you at each spot the same days, week after week?
Do folks know where you'll be? Do you cross promote each spot? How far apart are these spots? I get a lotta folks who are drivers, pop in whatever joint is handy. If they KNOW you will be at a certain spot on a certain day, they will seek you out and hopefully depend on you. Use social media to keep them informed.
Soon you'll find one spot is better than the other.

Ok, used my timer on my phone to check traffic. Averaged  750 or so an hour. No way I get 10% to stop. How do you get them to stop?
Once they do, they come back.....they love my fare....

Depends.  I have a great spot and I'm very fortunate, but it's taken me a few years to build it up to a real business.  If I went on just numbers the first year, I'd be flipping burgers at Wendy's right now.  I'll argue patience above all...so long as you know it's a good spot.  If you're not sure, then it's not a good spot.

I'm not gonna give up on my spot, tho, may add others. It may take awhile before it really kicks in, but I think it will. Folks tell me..."Dude, people around here love their Hot Dogs. Once they find out you're here, you'll be swamped!" Folk's come back cuz my stuff is awesome. Every new customer comes back, most tell friends.
All I can say is....Hang in there.
