Re:Best place in West NY for Beef on Weck?
I agree with Wanderingjew's comments about Schwabl's and Eckl's. Having eaten at both places and being fortunate enough to live in the area, I would characterize neither one as uptight or dark. Both places are very welcoming to their guests and serve outstanding food worthy of listing on the Roadfood site and in the Roadfood books. One could debate the merits of whose sandwich is better, but each is an order of magnitude better than the cookie-cutter places found around the country. The staff at each restaurant are generally great people. I believe that during the Buffalo-Rochester Roadfood tour a few years ago, Mr. Eckl spent time visiting with a group of Roadfooders at the end of the opening Friday evening. Not too uptight or dark, I would say.
