Hi friends...we will be in Madison in late August for one night on our way to Door county. It will be our anniversary, and we need recommendations for a nice dinner. TIA

There are no restaurants in Madison.

Are you staying the night or just passing through?  Since you're coming from Cincinnati I strongly suggest taking I-74 west and not I-65 northwest from Indianapolis unless you want to experience a crapload of construction on I-90 west of Elgin, and if it happens to be a Friday night it'll be a nightmare with all the flatlanders escaping north across the Cheddar Curtain.

But back to the topic at hand...what're you hungry for?  If you're going to be downtown and really want something nice, L'Etoile consistently wins tons of "Best Of" awards and chef/owner Tory Miller is a James Beard Award winner.

        In Madison:

Good Italian in the heart of the city/campus:
        Great German near the Capital:

I get there for work on occasion.  Both restaurants have great food/atmosphere.

If you want to rethink where to stop, this is a little gem further to the north/east:

I would highly recommend these two in downtown Madison.

                http://www.lombardinos.com/
Both are rather upscale, but would be perfect for a special event.  Also, while I agree with Brad about L' Etoile, I've found it to be a bit pretentious and snooty. Food is great, though. Here's one more "anniversary dinner" type place.

Sudie, if you're in the mood for pizza and don't mind paying a bit more, consider Salvatore's in Sun Prairie.  My wife and I had an excellent meal there last night.
