Looks like I'll be going to KC for a friend's military retirement ceremony.  It will be a quick trip, but my first to that area.  If I have only one meal on my own, what epic Kansas City roadfood place should I visit?

Please trust me on this- you do NOT want to go to Arthur Bryants.... I know things can change but when TTM, Buffetbuster and I went 5 years ago, the food was an embarassing disappointment..

I know you probably get enough good fried chicken in Birmingham, but honestly, I would have to go with Strouds.... If you must go with bbq, LC's would easily be my first choice.

Simplest question imaginable, Stroud's is the easy choice.  And like WJ said, if you want it to be barbecue, then it should be LC's.

Have fun in KC!

I'd give Stroud's my endorsement as well.

Since you have bbq in your handle and it's your first trip to KC, then I'd skip the fried chicken and go for ribs or burnt ends.  LC's is a genuine Roadfood gem with the best burnt ends in town, but it's not a place to take friends who are not RFers, i.e. the interior is unpleasant and the staff unfriendly (which may not matter to you if you are on your own).  Gates, on the other hand, is an extremely friendly place, large dining rooms, and an overall enjoyable experience.  Actually, if I were you, I'd eat at Gates and get take-out burnt ends from LC's!  My first experience at Arthur Bryant's was phenomenal, but I may've been lucky that day.    Chris

ayersian makes a fine point about your handle including bbq, and as such, your one meal might likely be a legendary KC BBQ joint.

I say, even with that caveat, your ONE MEAL should be at Stroud's. I would guess that Stroud's is in my Top 5 of ALL-TIME, as far as Roadfood restaurants go. I couldn't say that about any of the bbq contenders.

If I were to rank the 'cue places, my own order (of the places mentioned already) would be:

Oklahoma Joe's - I always seem to like this place more than BB and WJ, but I will tell you that on the occasion of a trip to KC where I had time for one meal, I drove to Stroud's to find them closed (yeah...I know...a shocker....didn't realize that they weren't open for lunch during the week), and turned around and went to OK Joe's - the original location, in the gas station in KCK.

LC's - If only for the burnt ends. The second best thing on LC's menu is their fries, but my personal opinion is that all of the other meat selections and sauce are better at Oklahoma Joe's. It is less convenient to get to and not in the best neighborhood, if that is important to you.

Gates' - I was surprised by how much I really liked Gates. The food was better than I had envisioned, and it is probably the most accessible (ease to get to, parking, spacious, etc.). I would absolutely go back.

Arthur Bryant's - I won't go so far as to say that you shouldn't ever go there, as mentioned above. There was a time when if I had time for only one meal in KC, it would have absolutely been at Arthur Bryant's. That time is gone. That said, from an historical perspective, I think it is a worthwhile visit - just go with lowered expectations.

Lastly, the one place that others have not mentioned - but, if your one meal is breakfast, you should forego all of these recommendations and go to Niecie's and order the pork chops fried right!

Keep in mind, to get to any of these places, you'd likely need to have your own car. Kansas City is not a very public transit-friendly town for out-of-towners.

One other bit of information you should know is that Stroud's can get very crowded.  Unless you get there right when they open or show up late, you will have a wait.  I have waited as long as an hour in past.  But with food this good, I have never regretted it.

For historical value, hit the Northland location.

Another voice for Stroud's and LC's.  And yes, the Oak Ridge Manor location has more character, but the new Kansas side location has all the original kitchen equipment and most of the staff from the now demolished 75th Street spot.

As far as LC's goes...what ayersian said.

Thank you! You guys are great!  I will be on my own for this eating adventure, and I will have a car.  I am now thinking about two lunches or breakfast and lunch.  First, I gotta have some of those burnt ends.  I have been looking at pictures of burnt ends for YEARS on this site!  I have to taste them.  Probably LC's.  And because Stroud's seems to be an overall favorite, I will set my sights on going there EARLY!  But...if I get out really early, Niecie's breakfast might overrule Stroud's fried chicken.  I will pull up a map so I can plot and plan, and still make it to the retirement ceremony - possibly sporting some burnt end crumbs!

Let me add, one order of burnt ends with sides of LC's fantastic Beans and excellent fresh cut Fries will provide you with at least two meals.  Bring a cooler and pick up some ice for leftovers going back to Birmingham.

In fact, if you go to Stroud's and Niecie's as well, you're going to have a very FULL cooler.  You'll also be the envy of all your Alabama neighbors when they get a whiff of the inside of your car...

Where in the City is the retirement ceremony, WW4B?

Hey 1bbqboy -

I will be staying in Independence.  The ceremony is in KC but on the east side close to Independence.  I have a rental car, so I will be able to get around.  Now I am thinking there is potential for a Sunday roadfood stop.....gotta see who is open so I don't get travelin' manned!  This is gonna be fun!  I have heard so much about this great roadfood city!

My son & I just did a Long Island to Colorado trip by uHaul.  We mapped it out according to stops we wanted to make along the way.  For us it was an epic 3 day trip and we wanted to hit Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City and it was the highlight of the trip.  We expected the ribs or pulled pork to be a delight but the surprise unanimous favorite was the sausage sandwich. We are both certified KCBS judges and we both have seen our share of great (and not so great) ribs, chicken, brisket and pork.  We both thought their pork and ribs were fine but the sausage (with a pitcher of beer) was great.

Thanks BB. We stopped in your stomping ground on the way through.  After the trip I had some shirts made for us to commemorate the trip.  Lunch that day was the Moonlite in Owensboro and breakfast the next morning was a place in Mission KS called RJ's for burnt end hash!

What a great photo!  I wasn't even on the trip and I want one of those t-shirts.  Congratulations on what must have been a memorable trip.  I went to RJ's last year and had the burnt ends hash.  Truly an excellent idea!

If I can plug custom ink (http://www.customink.com/) who made the shirts, it was super easy and fantastic customer service.  I can't praise them enough.

I completely forgot about RJ's!  The 'Que is good, but not among KC's best.  The real attractions are the unique menu items, unlike anything offered anywhere else in town:  http://rjsbbq.com/

Hofbrau and Colonial Cottage

If I had known....
The reason for the diversion thru Cincy was 'someone' had tickets for Dave Mathews.  Hofbrauhaus was primarily for the beer and to see the place being of German heritage.  I could fall in love with that part of town; super place.  Colonial Cottage was for the goetta. I can't say if I ever did try scrapple even though I've had plenty of opportunity but I needed to try the goetta and enjoyed it.

LC's for the WIN!!!
I had a fabulous burnt ends meal at LC's on Saturday.  The pork-loving Southerner is SOLD on burnt ends.  Fabulous!  Crispy, meaty, moist, a little fatty - all at once, in each bite!  The sauce complimented the burnt ends beautifully.  Who knew beef could be this good?  The burnt ends were wonderful!  My friend enjoyed the very fine sliced pork but would have liked a bit more spice in the sauce.  The fries and potato salad were above average.  And they have strawberry soda on tap!  Great meal!  Thanks to all who weighed in and directed me to my terrific Kansas City meal!
