MikeS.

I hate when that happens. A good place close by that you like closes shop. I've had that happen a few times.

That's happened a ton here the past five or so years. I'd say at least 10 places I frequented have closed up in that span.

This winter has hurt a lot of small outfits. People just won't go out in snow/severe cold if they don't have to.

It happened to me.  It wasn't entirely weather, but mostly the economy that cut off my store's foot traffic in the winter of '08-'09.  We never fully recovered and closed almost two years later.  It is a killer for small-margin businesses...you have to have people to turn into customers.

Friends-
I am sorry to report that Janet and I will not be able to participate in the Cincinnati activity. Between her work schedule and my continuing medical issues it would not be in our best interests to add the stress of the road trip to our agenda at this time.

We look forward to reading of the meetings, and should any of you pass thru the Louisville area coming or going, please let us know, so that a Hubers visit might be arranged if the timing is right.

Al - I was looking forward to seeing you and Janet again, I too understand the value of good health, so sit back and relax, you will be thought of during the crawl and you might even get a phone call or two from the uour.

Bonk - I got an email from eastside chili closing, I am trying to fill that spot if you can think of anything out that way that would fit the day.

EVERYONE - I want to thank you for your kind words of support during the past 6 weeks.  Each day gets a little bit easier, butI still miss her greatly.  I had the itinerary all laid out but with the closing of eastside chili, I need to do some adjustments

My secret surprises have fizzled out do to insurance regulations.  I was trying to set up tours of:

Graeters Production Facility (to show how each batch is still made 2 1/2 gallons at a time)
Skyline Commissary (to show 500 gallons of chili at one time)
Grippos (to show FRESH hot potato chips)

but all three have since backed out due to insurance regulations.
I am trying to work on another option with Graeters so who knows.

Cajunking - I missed the whole part about why you were absent from this site and just re-read this thread. Belated condolences on the loss of your mother.

The best suggestion I would've had was Great Scott Diner, but it closed a couple of months ago.

Maybe TJ can help with suggestions as well, but here are the best ones I have:

Roney's: A former Roy Rogers -- the last one for a 500-mile range -- with a happy ending. Corporate said they were going to cut costs on product, and the owner told them to stick it. So he changed the name and kept all of the old Roy Rogers food (with a couple of name changes). It's about three minutes from Jungle Jim's and opens at 10 a.m. 474 Roney Lane, Eastgate. https://www.facebook.com/roneysrestaurant

Country Inn: The name pretty much speaks for itself. Large portions, good prices, lots of daily specials. If we're going several different places this might be too much food for lunch, but it could be a better breakfast option before JJ's. About 10 minutes from JJ's. 910 Ohio Pike, Withamsville. No web site.

The Hitching Post: Famous for going underwater during the flood of 1997 when the Ohio River went 18 feet over flood stage, it's like a smaller version of Country Inn in every way. The fried chicken is some of the best in the city IMO. The prices are incredibly low for what you get. The only problem is the place is really small. It probably only seats 30, although for whatever reason it isn't nearly as busy as it should be, especially during non-peak dining hours. It's probably 15 minutes from JJ's and would take you to within about 10-12 minutes of downtown Cincinnati if everyone's going to eventually head that way anyway. Open at 8 a.m. I've never had breakfast there but everything I've had on the menu has been excellent. 4535 Kellogg Ave. (U.S. 52), East End. http://hitchingpostkellogg.com/

Eli's: Another small place that unfortunately the locals have figured out, it has a menu of four items, each of which is excellent. Pulled pork, smoked turkey sandwich, two hot dogs and ribs. All are $5 or $8 with sides. And the sides are fantastic. The downside, as mentioned, is it's small and popular. About 20 minutes from JJ's and five minutes past Hitching Post approaching downtown. You can get downtown from there in less than 10 minutes. 3313 Riverside Dr., Tusculum. You can smell when you're getting close. http://elisbarbeque.com/

Island Boi: It's in a horrible location in the middle of nowhere and has zero decorations inside. But the food is fantastic. Polynesian food is obviously an oddity in Cincinnati and I really hope this place makes it work. I don't recommend the short ribs, which are good but not worth the price, but everything else is well worth it. It's about 15 minutes from JJ's and doesn't get you closer to anything. It would put you at least a half hour from downtown. Seating is very limited. 1241 State Route 131, Milford. http://www.islandboibbq.com/

Campbell's Barn: Another out of the way place, this place also has phenomenal fried chicken and as you probably guessed, country food with big portions. Similar to Country Inn, I think it's better but it's also at least 15 minutes east of JJ's and takes you away from everything else. It's only open for lunch and dinner. 1852 S.R. 125, Amelia. http://www.campbellsbarn.com/

Those are my suggestions on the east side of Cincinnati.

We're going to have a really large group. Are we going to try and flood these places all at once or are we going to split up and rotate?

If we rotate will we have at least one place we can all sit down eat and chat?

I'll be driving up to Dayton from Atlanta on Thursday, April 10th - I hope that The Jug in Middletown is open by then (http://www.thejugmiddletown.com/ordereze/default.aspx).  I'll be at the Eat and Greet, and hope that 1 or 2 of the following join me:  my brother, nephew, my friend from Columbus.  Can't wait.

I have been doing a little research into trying some schnecken while in Cincy and it looks like the best place to buy it is at Queen City Cookies.  At some point while in town, I will definitely be stopping in.  Hey ChiTownDiner, can I talk you into some chocolate bacon schnecken?

schnecken tend to be a seasonally-available item in Cincinnati

just make sure you call the vendor you are going to to be sure they will be making them that day.  You may even want to reserve one (two, three, whatever)

Actually, there are a few local bakeries that make them year 'round.
They usaully make a few daily and single serve by piece. If you want a whole one, you need to pre-order. I do it all the time.

I was already planning to get one for our own buffetbuster ironically. Swear to gawd. :) Different souce than above though.
If you want one too Buddy or want to split the one for cliff LMK via PM.
There are a couple of west side bakeries doing them awesomely, and they run around $5-7 for a whole ( iced and raisins) so they are not hateful price-wise.

I'm a UC grad but am good friends with a girl (now woman) who worked at Virginia Bakery (the Ground Zero of Cincy Schneken) during high school.
I used to watch them being made in teh bakery in awe, and have taken them as gifts to many friends in many states in the union. As an ex-employee from long ago with the recipe Keri still makes the original recipe schnken recipe at home, but teh Viginia Bakery recipe has found its way into the hands of several local bakers.

It's sadly a "skipped generation" kinda of pastry as there was a demand but not alot of interest in supplying them. Now that changing, but it's still a sleeper item to many around here.

Queen City Cookies makes schnecken on a regular basis. I don't know the quantities they bake, though. It might be wise to call ahead if lots of people want it. Busken Bakery also does schnecken around holidays. It may be close enough to Easter for them to offer it.

The original Busken Bakery is open 24/7.

I don't know whether this could be an option. Newtown Farm Market is not to far off the beaten path. They have Amish goods, fresh produce, and "Old Tyme" frozen custard. It may not be on par with Kopp's, but it's what we have.
