If most of the confirmed participants show up, this will be a memorable Roadfood get together... Hopefully this means that the Roadfood community is growing and we can do more of these larger get togethers in the future
-Danny
I suspect the reason for this year's high turnout is related to Cincinnati's location.  Although not equidistant from all participants, it is centrally located for a reasonable roadtrip or short flight.

This logic leads me to propose a future tour of Cleveland (Eastern European, Lake Erie Fish Fries, BBQ, Delis, etc.), and, while not quite as conveniently located, a tour of Detroit as described here.  There's more than just Coney Islands in the Motor City, and there's been prolonged talk of setting up a gathering, here at Roadfood.

And now back to your regularly scheduled discussion about Cincinnati Chili...

Holy cow, people are flying in for this? Cool -- I didn't know Cincinnati rated.

I've heard so much about Cincinnati chili over the years that it's worth a flight just to see what it's like!

As grocery stores go, Jungle Jim's is rather amazing.  Unfortunately, I'm just not a grocery store guy.  I'll be bored in ten minutes.  No doubt there are others, though, who are very excited about the idea of visiting there and hopefully it will still be included in the day's itinerary for them.  If you are able to manage a tour of Graeter's, well, now you are talking my language!  And you will be right up there with my all-time heros.

Thank you Mr. Hoffman.  I look forward as well (I am also a Michael).  My brother and I have been to many Cincinnati chili parlors, but he'd be the expert between us.  The only thing that may keep us from coming is that his wife is due a week or so after the tour (she may come if she feels up for it).

I'm still going to try to come up to Ohio for a week or two.  If they cannot make it, I'm going to try to get my nephew in Columbus to join me.  He's a student at tOSU and a Skyline employee. A four-way (onions for me) sounds great!

Maybe schedule the JJ trip when they first open so those who aren't interested won't miss any prime eating time. Plus JJ (especially the Fairfield location) starts getting crowded late in the morning. Both locations open at 8 a.m.

I agree that JJ's should be included as an option, and early in the morning on Saturday. We will be commuting from home, near Louisville, for a long one-day tour with the group on that Saturday, and will probably make JJ's our first stop at 8am or so...then hook up with the group where ever they are at 10 or 10:30am.
I would urge all to check out the place, especially those who have not visited it before. If nothing else, it is fun to inventory the exotice meat section and count the dozens of TURDUCKENs.  And Pov Pete has made a full meal of the free samples of hundreds of cheeses available !

I would also suggest trying the Jamón Ibérico.  It's way too expensive to buy (2 types - 1 is $69.99/lb and the other $119.99/lb last time I was there), but if you're nice, they may let you sample it.  Either type is out of this world.

Several people are staying there and it may serve as our starting point.  Hotels in and around Cincy vary in price, closer to downtown or in SE Indiana the prices are up on weekends due to the Casino traffic.

Northern Kentucky is just across the river and has many hotels and reasonable prices.

I do not know where BB & WJ are staying it is rumored to be a secret location somewhere in the NE Cincy area, perhaps he would disclose his location.

The bus idea is a good one, but after getting several pm(s) about people wanting to drive by seperately I feel the best idea will be to meet at point X and car pool from there.

The other important question is, when is everybody coming in, and how long are we staying?

We could potentially arrive late Thursday and depart Sunday evening, giving us a full day on either side of the tour for non-chili related exploration.

So, who else is coming in early or leaving late, and is interested in some extracurricular activity?

I don't mean to be the punchbowl turd, but would it make sense to break-up the crawl into 2 or 3 groups and hit the chili parlors in different rotations? We could have a big mid-day get-together at Jungle Jim's and another at a sit-down place for dinner. Doing it like this would ease the parking and dining bow-wave situations at the Greek Meat Sauce Emporiums. It would also give some of us a chance to minimize contact with our Roadfood nemeses.

They could make it a day game for national TV, but I can't see why they would do that...neither Tampa nor Cincinnati is a big market, they're not even in the same league. It's likely it would be a night game, which would start at 7:10.

If it's the first home Saturday of the season it could potentially be an afternoon start circa 1pm.  It seems like a lot of teams do that, especially if it's the first weekend of the season.

MH's nemesis has already said he has plans and will be unable to attend.  (I still think he is make believe, all this time and I still have never met him)

JRPfeff - I have been talking to all those places I listed  and all have plenty of room and are willing to add the extra staffing to handle the rush.  I had to eliminate two places as they were just TOOOO small (17 seats and 21 seats)

I am trying to schedule eating around the peak hours, with either the tour of Graeter's Production Facility or the American Sign Museum.

I had been talking to Grippos about a tour of their production facility, but alas an email today stated that after checking with their insurance company... NO TOURS allowed.
nothing like a fresh potato chip fresh out of the fryer.

Sundancer - ALL of the chili parlors have non chili food stuffs, most have the other chili parlor traditions Double Decker Sandwiches (Fat Timmys aka Eastside Chili actually roast their own meat fresh daily for their sandwiches)  most also serve burger and fries and salads too.

CTD and Budreaux - I am up for almost anything food related or other wise, a visit to Zips is also one of those most stops.
Don't forget NKY and SEI, they both have some good eats
SEI fried chicken is yummy, not sure what NKY is known for but I am sure we can find something.

Also if you are here for Friday you could experience a local tradition called

FISH FRY FRIDAY!  Being the last Friday before Good Friday almost EVERY local parish will have their fish fry going strong. (God Bless them Catholic Folks)

GENERAL QUESTION TO THE GROUP

What do you all think about the Sunday Brunch at the revolving restaurant in Covington?

I still have emails out to another chili parlor (it was listed in the first list but not in the one with all the info about the places.)

and to Graeter's about the production facility tour

A couple of thoughts on this...

-- I actually like the coneys at Fat Timmy's/Eastside Café, but TJ and a local friend of mine weren't thrilled. I do like their sandwiches. Don't get the wings.

-- Since it sounds like a few of you will be in town way earlier than the rest, a couple of suggestions:
Findlay Market (and if you do that, Chicago Gyros is just couple of miles away -- they have the best gyro in the city IMHO; the area is suspect though, pun intended).
The Party Source (for those who like beer/liquor, it's a HUGE liquor store just over the river in NKY).
The Hitching Post (about 8 miles east of downtown; the chicken is awesome, but this would only work for a smaller group)
Eli's (same general area as The Hitching Post and same problem with seating for large groups)
Mad Mike's (up-and-coming burger joint we've discussed that has six locations around the tri-state)

-- Zip's is good, I think Arthur's (a couple of miles away) is better, and Terry's is the best of all but has limited space.

-- My dad actually runs a fish fry on the northwest side of town (he's a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus). I think their hours are 4-7 on Friday, and obviously they're a non-profit that donates a lot of money to the mentally retarded.

We booked a suite at El Rancho Rankin. We got a really good rate. Anyone know anything about the place?

I was fortunate enough to have been made an Ohio Colonel by the owner of El Rancho Rankin, Rankin Harrison. It was an honor bestowed upon me because, he said, no one living in Ohio should merely be an Admiral in West Virginia's Cherry River Navy. I have always enjoyed my stays at El Rancho Rankin. Be sure to take advantage of the free dinners offered each morning. Oh, and ignore the construction.

I'll bet you got a good rate. There's plenty of vacant lots in the strip mall that went there when it was torn down. You could probably stay in one of those.

CajunKing, I bet if you contacted the Enquirer, and/or City Beat, a lot more restaurants may be willing to "open up' for the group. Publicity Rocks!!
