Cliff - Big Boy was (and is) my first choice. Unfortunately, SW Ohio has no Big Boy restaurants, I checked. (Insert crying emoticon here)
Oh, there are a number of them in the Cincinnati area. Here's one:
Big Boy #1
3226 Central Pkwy
Cincinnati, OH 45225
You must have missed 'em.
If that is the same one from 50 years ago, then that would have been one of my old breakfast hangouts in college.
It is in the same place, but the old building was torn down and replaced a few years ago.
Frisch's is indeed different than the "other" Big Boy restaurant chains. While Bob's Big Boy was famous on the west coast and Elias Brothers had a lock on Michigan, Frisch's has been a Cincinnati success story. Many other parts of the country had Big Boy chains that have fallen by the wayside. Shoney's, a chain from the South, got its start as a Big Boy franchisee but moved away from that model. St. Louis's last Big Boy closed a few years ago, and some former employees have opened a "continuation business" across the highway from the old location featuring a similar menu without the branding. Even Elias fell on hard times a few years ago and filed for bankruptcy. And like Soozycue says, it is the Frisch's tartar sauce that "makes" the Big Boy. The others use 1000-island and it just isn't the same.
