Tater Tot Casserole - Sun, 08/25/13 3:36 PM

Not sure if this is a "side dish" or a "main", but my daughter has a new boyfriend from MInnesota who swaers this is a Minnesota special. He may make it for us. He says you need: a can of some sort of cream soup (chicken, celery, mushroom, whatever) a bag of frozen veggies, and, of course, a bag of frozen tater tots.

Who has eaten this delicacy?

This staple dish has been around since BEFORE Tater Tots using just plain old potatoes. When Tater Tots came along, people started using them because it was simpler and a time saver.

according to Davydd it doesn't exist!

For one thing it is hotdish in Minnesoohta not casserole. Just a different name. You gotta get with the joke if you want to discuss it, you betcha. Casserole is a traditional church supper or bring around to the widow by the neighbor offering same as about anywhere else in the country. The Tater Tot is an invented processed food by Ore-Ida in 1953, not in Minnesota but in Oregon. Baby Boomer humorists, including Garrison Kiellor, Howard Mohr, and couple of recent cook book writers have picked up this combination and emphasized it to poke some fun--something for the Barnes & Noble regional book shelf. Then out of towners from New York City to Rhode Island come to Minnesota actually seeking this dish out in restaurants as roadfood, and of course, out of the thousands of restaurants a few will pick up on the promotion, especially for out of staters and now seemingly younger people who know nothing but processed food. If you are looking for authentic Minnesota immigrant settler food grandmother made, this isn't it. Grandmother died before Tater Tots were invented.

Darn, I could have had Tater Tots with my last sandwich but instead opted for sweet potato fries, another hot food item supposedly growing out of the South.

Coffee just spurted out of my nose, I was laughing so hard!

I can assure you neither Rhode Islanders or New Yorkers are coming to Minnesota nor do they know what Hot Dish is- Rhode Islander wouldn't know Minnesota from Mississippi a far as they're  concerned its the same thing  . The last time I was in Minnesota I found plenty of out of state license plates- Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin and North Dakota- not a NY, RI or any other east coast license plate in sight. In addition I can't imagine any restaurant, either in the Twin Cities or off the beaten path would be STUPID enough to add it to their menu as a Joke, lose money and go bankrupt as a result... They are on the menu for locals to enjoy.

Davydd, you remind me of that scene from the Wizard of Oz (ignore that man ie. "hotdish"  behind the curtain) well, that man and "hotdish" are very real- it's  ok , we know there's other stuff to be had in Minnesota..

I grew up with this casserole. I don't like it, but Bob does. So-easy enough for me to make, and on those nights for dinner I treat myself to something he doesn't like-seafood....

Wait a minute, I thought the hotdish was a Methodist thing?!?!?!
We make a version of that hotdish only we use Mrs. Dee's hash brown patties on the top. This is my favorite hotdish.

Dale,

I was thinking mainly of only one rube from New York/Rhode Island that fell for the Tater Tot hotdish joke.

Dale,

And I will continue going back for more if I ever find myself in the land of 10,000 lakes again...

Growing up in small-town Wisconsin, our school system actually had "tater tot hot dish" on our school lunch menu.  gross, gross, gross.... cream of mushroom soup gross, and that is the worst kind of gross.  this dish looked like it came out of someone's nose.

I've heard the same thing said about Rochester NY's garbage plate (except out of a different orifice)
and I'd still enjoy both

(Back in the old days)
A Kindergarten teacher gave her class an assignment.
Each student was instructed to bring in an object that represented their religion for show & tell.
1st student - My name's Benjamin, I'm Jewish and this is a Star of David
2nd student - I'm Mary and I'm Catholic and this is a Rosary
3rd Student - I'm Tommy And I'm Methodist and this is a casserole!

I use cream of mushroom soup, a few cans of green beans, a pound of hamburger and then a bag of tots and it is delicious.

Mine is lean ground round, cream of celery, onions, carrots, peas, mini tater-tots, and shredded Gouda put on top the last 5 minutes of baking.

I was born and raised in Iowa in a Methodist family that ate tater tot casserole every other week.  But that was decades ago.  I've moved several states far far away and melded into a Lutheran family that eats tater tot hotdish every other week.  I yearn for my old casserole.

I've eaten a few things that have come out of a USN galley but the Cream of Mushroom-green bean- pound of hamburger and bag of tater tot combo, that scares even me.
