The latest poll lists Chile as a fall food. And here I always thought it was a nation in South America and a type of pepper.

Welcome back, your dreams were your ticket out.
Welcome back to that same old place that you laughed about.
Well the names have all changed since you hung around,
But those dreams have remained and they're turned around.

Welcome back Joe!

The last time MH made chili, I made some pinto beans on the side for me.  I wasn't even allowed to have them on the same plate!!   Now that's a real curmudgeon.

First thing I did was to go to the forums to see if anybody else had mentioned it. Beat me by 5 hours.

Joe, welcome back.  You may be the first to be banned and welcome back with such accolade.  I first met you in NOLA and that was my good fortune.  Obviously the roadfood site missed you.

I got one King Stropharia Mushroom this year.  At least I know that the inoculation worked.  Hoping for a big harvest next July.

The names seem to be more interchangeable in some places and less in others.  And then there's the 3rd version "chilli"...

Chile ~ Green Chile cheeseburgers, Green Chile Stew (pork and chicken versions), Chile Rellenos, Green Chile meatloaf, Southwestern Lasagna w/Green Chiles, Grilled cheese sandwiches w/Jalapeno Cheddar bread, Hatch Chile Jack & more green chiles, Green Chile omelets, Chile Relleno Casserole, etc. etc. etc. ... I roast hundreds of 'em every fall & freeze them to use all year long in just about anything I can think of. But I always run out before the next fall harvest!

Chile got my vote

And ever one of the things you mentioned involves the use of chiles. But the pot of meat flavored with chiles or powder made from chiles is call chili.

Joe - Welcome back my friend, I have missed you very much.

As for Chili in Chile when it's Chilly, according to the NWS Chile has a diverse climate ranging from hot and humid to desert to sub polar.

So I suggest whilst in Chile, eat only Chili whilst in the southern sub polar region thus making it the perfect climate to eat Chile err Chilly err Chili.

My daughter lives in Santiago, and her boyfriend visited us here in the US for a month, this past June.

The food in Chile is awful. Although Argentina is right next, Chile doesn't import a lot of beef. Chilean cows are raised on mountains, and the meat is tough and stringy. You are more likely to see it served in "fine" restaurants as ropas viejas rather than as steak.

A typical meal in a Chilean household is hot dogs cut up in buttered spaghetti. Chileans eat a LOT of hot dogs. Chile has a rate of obesity rivaling that of the US.

And those "fine" restaurants... an Applebee's would be a dress-up dinner, a night out. Chili's, TGIF... tops. Olive Garden and Red Lobster are cream of the crop.

Felipe was blown away by our choices here in the US. On the way home from the airport we stopped at a Chili's for lunch, because it was closest and he hadn't eaten since the day before, and he thought we were taking him somewhere special. A month later, after Roadfood places, Old Forge Philadelphia and New Jersey Italian, a couple high end steakhouses and home cooked grilling and barbeque, he wasn't sure he could go home!

(What he DID take home was a bag of my dry rub mix and the recipe for ribs and pulled pork, the indirect low and slow method.)

MetroplexJim, What a proud moment for Tom/Chewy/Chubby.  I will probably stop at Chubby's next month, I am sure Tom will fill me in on the details.  Thanks for the welcome!

Do you think MH is going to get mad at us for derailing his thread?

Oh, the guy is furious. Furious! By the way, don't try the cream of crab soup, the chili, or the beans. They will make you very sick. And besides, I wouldn't want him to run out before lleechef and I get back there.

We need to schedule a meet-up at Chubby's.  The beans alone are worth the trip!
