I crewed on the replica of Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hinde that they made in honor of his 1573 circumnavigation of the globe. Pretty awesome. The overnight trip down the CA coast was amazing, especially going up to the crow's nest in the morning and looking DOWN at the sails with a Maltese Cross on each sail and dolphins off the bow. Golden Hinde
I also had a chance to tour the replica of the Endeavour, Captain Cook's vessel. What was amazing that all his discoveries, sailing around Australia, Hawaii and more, were done on a ship that was 65 feet long. To put it in perspective, that is shorter than a standard tractor-trailer rig used for long-distance trips. HMB Endeavour
I saw this in San Diego on Sept. 22nd. I wish I'd had time to explore it, but it made a nice photo from the deck of the cruise ship I was on. HMS Surprise
Of course, it was interesting to compare to the ship next to it---not a replica, but the real Star of India, the oldest active sailing ship, from 1863.
I do love ships and sailing!
