With the Heisman voting deadline almost upon us the one thing we know for certain is that the award for the best football player in college football once again will not go to the best college football player. But none of that matters today. What matters today is Muck Fishigan!

Not much of a game this year considering Michigan is pretty much an also ran team and only second best in its own state.

The best player by far, at least quarterback, is Jameis Winston of Florida State and may not get the Heisman considering the unresolved cloud that hangs over his head for sexual assault which probably will scare votes away. In just reading articles lately it looks like there is a not so subtle push for Alabama's A. J. McCarron. That will be a mistake. He's OK to good but really a caretaker quarterback on a team that about any competent quarterback could step in and do as well. Still though, the most exciting player to watch is Johnny Football (Manziel) but he hasn't had a game to capture the imagination like the upset of Alabama last year. He just bleeds drama, excitement and charisma on the field and backs it up with talent.

I have to disagree with you about Winston being the best player. I wouldn't even rate him the best quarterback. But that's the trouble with the Heisman now. It is supposed to go to the best college football player, and the best might be an offensive tackle or a linebacker. In 2009 a running back won (Mark Ingram), and a cornerback won in 1997 (Charles Woodson). A wide receiver won in 1991 (Desmond Howard) and 1987 (Tim Brown). But except for Woodson, Howard and Brown, and two ends (1949 and 1936) who played both ways it's been all quarterbacks and running backs (including a couple of fullbacks) since the inception of the award for the best college football player in 1935.

Florida State won big again. They probably have a lock on the BCS championship game. McCarron threw a 99 yard pass to Cooper to put Alabama up on Auburn. Longest Alabama touchdown ever.

Michael,

You may get your wish. Alabama just stupided their way out of the BCS championship game and Number 1 ranking.

They got lucky by a blink of an eye to get one second put back on the clock, attempted a 57 yard field goal by a guy who had already missed 3 in the game and had it returned by Auburn for a 100 yard touchdown. That was unbelievable. They should have taken their chances with a hail Mary pass or overtime. Maybe they didn't think McCarron had the arm to make a hail Mary. If so, he may have won and then lost his Heisman hopes in one game.

It wouldn't surprise me, though, if Auburn moved ahead of Ohio State. Of course that would be wrong. And then there's the Big 10 title game next week between Ohio State and Michigan State.
Oh, the Alabama kicker on that last play wasn't the same guy who missed the three earlier attempts.

Had he made 1 or 2 of those it might've changed Saban's mind about the attempted 4th down conversion that ultimately failed.

Given FSU's passing attack and what OSU showed on defense today, a championship game between the 2 could feature a lot of yardage and points.  It'll be interesting to see what discipline is handed to the 2 OSU players who were ejected today, especially the offensive lineman who not only got kicked out but then compounded the situation by flipping off the crowd as he walked to the tunnel.  I won't be surprised if he's suspended for both the Big 10 championship game and whatever bowl game the Buckeyes play.

Fact is - as a native Pennsylvanian - I have always been and always will be, an admirer of Joe Paterno.  (I don't want to pick any scabs here, just R.I.P., JoePa).

There is not a lot of comparative action between the B1G and SEC to evaluate strengths but the SEC might not be as strong this year to assume the SEC champ should go to the BCS title game over an undefeated Ohio State. But then again it is not a lock for Ohio State to go undefeated. Michigan State is no pushover.

Edit for an additional thought -

If you are a "name team" from a "name conference", an undefeated record will get you into the title game, regardless of what the computer says.

That's why Paterno joined the Big Ten.  He had several undefeated seasons where PSU, then an independent and pre-BCS - did not win the "national championship" because they were kept out of the "big game" by conference politics.

If OSU beats MSU they are in the Big Game "like Flynn".

You are correct, Sir.  At least I had the Metro area right!

Interesting long story made short:
In the Spring of 1968 I was one of a dinner party of five prior to a speech given that evening at Grove City College.  The other four were Bob Richards, a PR rep from General Mills (Wheaties), Myron Cope, and my father-in-law.

Turned out Cope was interviewing Richards for a future feature story in SI (which I link to here).  Among the chit-chat about modern equipment (e.g., fiberglass poles) and the modern athlete I brought up Calvin Murphy being able to dunk a baskerball.  Richards insisted that I was crazy, maintaining that no man of such short stature could do that!

If FSU and tOSU win this coming week there will be no controversy as to who should be playing in the BCS title game. Everyone had their chance and the one game losers blew it. That's the way it goes. I'd be shocked if FSU lost to Duke but not if tOSU lost to MSU. That game is not a lock by any means. If tOSU were to lose and Auburn wins this week then it will be an FSU vs. Auburn title. But then if FSU, tOSU and Auburn all lose it will get really interesting again and my brain can not process what would happen then right now but there are no other Pac 12 or B1G teams deserving to be in the title game that last scenario should happen.

When they do the Pro  Player introductions on TV and the players read the Queue Cards with their schools on them, the only one I VIVIDLY remember is Otis Sistrunk - University of Mars!

The Oakland Raiders signed him in 1972, at which time he became the only active player in the NFL to not have played college football. His entry in the team program was listed as “U.S. Mars” (short for United States Marines).
During a Monday Night Football telecast, a camera panned to the steaming bald head of Sistrunk. ABC commentator Alex Karras, noting this alien-like presence and the program information quipped that Sistrunk’s alma mater was the University of Mars.
