Seven years @ $22+ million per, guaranteed for this!

I thought the Pujols contract was insane, but this really "takes the cake".

The fragile Ellsbury, who has averaged only 100 games a season and is two seasons past his one really good one is signed by the NYY for seven more @ millions more than his one great year was worth!

Freddy Lynn was born too soon.

Mike Trout is making $510K/season and is not eligible for arbitratation until 2015.  Were I he, I'd be packed in styrofoam and riding in a Brinks truck until then!

Football 'sux' this year (at least for my teams); if it weren't for the uniforms I couldn't tell basketball teams apart; what's hockey?

"Figure filbert" was the old slang term for those who are fascinated by baseball statistics (someone who is 'nutty' about stats).  Today, these folks call themselves SABREmetricians.  And, SABREmetrics has become the mathematical basis for "Moneyball".

I'm far from one of those, but when I was a kid I rejoiced at the publication of the Baseball Encyclopedia back in the '60's, and as a young adult, I thoroughly enjoyed Bill James' works (BTW, Bill is a fellow eocnomist).  And, today, I find this site to be endlessly fascinating.

The estimable Robinson Cano at age 31 gets 10 years @$24M from the Mariners.

The two players in my memory similar are Rob Carew and Robbie Alomar, both now in the HOF.  Check their stats after age 31 and ask yourself how many of their post - 31 seasons are worth $24M even in today's market.

Only a 24 year old Hornsby carrying Mazeroski's glove would give fair value for Cano's money.

What a good day for my Rangers:  the Mariners have joined the Angels in financial insanity.

He is a gifted hitter but that nonchalant way about him doesn't work in ratings...ticket or Jersey sales.

Gotta be feisty hustle & have a little charisma (or drama) to play here...in the most exciting market in the world. Even if it is for the dreaded Yankees.

With Jeter & Arod out most of the season the Yankees saw the writing on the wall as far as the future...without Cano.

It's like Christmas morning with the Yankees signing of Carlos Beltran.

It doesn't matter what he did anywhere else...the eternal snapshot of him in the minds of New York baseball fans is looking at a called strike to end the NLCS....not being willing to slide into a base (hurting himself every time he did) & clunking into everyone & everything that didn't clunk into him first in the outfield for the Mets.

Meanwhile the Mets signed Curtis Granderson.

Go Mr. Met!

Cano is such a smooth hitter he should be able to earn that keep as a DH late in that contract. Other than day-to-day minor issues he doesn't miss much.

While he's on the field you'll also get the bonus of watching his smooth-style of fielding. It looks like Swan Lake when he fields ground balls or involved in double plays. He goes after fly balls like he holding a briefcase in the hand not holding his glove.

Which cheek do you use for your Red Man?

I just renewed our Brewers 10-game season ticket plan for 2014.  No price increase (and after last season it would be tough to justify) and by paying in full we get Opening Day tickets for free.  I'm looking forward to seeing them mathematically eliminate the Pirates from playoff contention on April 12.

Speaking of the Buccos, who's on first?  Morneau left for Colorado and Jones signed with Florida, which leaves Gaby Sanchez on the current active roster.

The Twins sign catcher, Kurt Suzuki for the coming year to replace Joe Mauer moving permanently to first base. So, if they lose 90 games for a fourth straight season they at least have a chance to become accomplished violin players to accompany the losses with appropriate music.

And pay him less than the Yankees offered.

Let's guess why:

a)  Summers in Dallas are nicer than NYC's.
b)  Dalls has better Korean restaurants than NYC.
c)  Businesses are leaving Texas for New York.
d)  The Constitution of the Republic of Texas forbids any levy of tax on incomes.

Oh well, the Rangers are blessed by the wealthiest owners in MLB; evidently they found some loose change in their petty cash.

The old owner, Tom Hicks, was a publicity-seeking hedge fund hustler who signed A-Rod, then couldn't afford to keep him.

These guys are the 'real deal' with net worths in 'real business' sufficient to buy and sell the ownership of the entire AL East and the local loudmouths: Jerry Jones & Mark Cuban.

As it is Christmas, here is all that remains on my list:

Mitch Moreland to "my" Bucs for a few prospects "my" Rangers need to replenish their system and repair their foolishness in overpaying the Cubbies in order to rent the mediocre Garza.  (The Yanks should sign Garza and make him shave that ridiculous goatee)!

Nelson Cruz to the Orioles.  I'm a former season ticket-holder at Camden and still have a soft spot for them.  I'm sure that Angelos hasn't run out of asbestos victims yet, so he can afford Cruz and get the attendance back to the 3.5 MM that cathedral of a ballpark deserves.

Oh, I'd 'heard' of several - and seen several play, including Jeffrey Hammonds who never lived up to his potential after he came to the Orioles out of Stanford - but only one on all those lists resembles anyone you would want, at age 31, to give $130 MM to for seven years.

Never underestimate the ability of the Federal Judiciary to foment outrage.

As sure as I'm sitting here A-Rod's "best that money can buy" lawyers are "judge-shopping".

The result will be an injunction delaying enforcement of the suspension.  As the wheels of justice grind slowly, expect A-Rod to be free to play in 2014.

No Federal Judge will step-in & interfere with this decision in such a way to allow A Rod a way to weasel his way back to the field at any time during the 2014 season...after his appeal & case went to arbitration... a ruling to suspend him & his lack of his own testimony in the case.

The Players Association has accepted the arbitration decision so A Rod is like an island. A player with no team...union or league in his corner...and a ruling against him that his high-powered lawyers couldn't fix or win in the first place.

That Judge would come under such scrutiny his/her own reputation and career would be on the line...and the bankroll of A Rod won't be footing any bills for any Judge foolish enough to view A Rod as a "victim' of the arbitration process....with an "emergency" situation to play baseball.

CCinNJ, "we shall see what we shall see".

Even though "Casa Rodriguez" is belching smoke, the flame of a failed drug test has yet to be seen.

Given the hubris of the Federal Judiciary, expect - at the very least - an injunction.

You think that no Judge would "risk his career" by offending a general sense of decency and fairness.

Au contraire, there are many Judges out there who would like the chance to set a precedent that would result in the eventual overturn of the Exemption from Anti-Trust Law that MLB enjoys.

From their narcissistic perspective, such would 'make a career' and give them a line or two of immortality in future legal texts.

Believe me, you and I agree on the A-Rod matter.  But, again, "we shall see what we shall see" ...

Well...he's 37 years old & was signed to a minor league contract. He does hold the record for skipping stones in Japan(& his arm is made of rubber)...so there's always hope.

I saw his salary last year for the Marines & it was 80 million!!! But...that was Yen.

Many of the younger pitchers from the bullpen that did a great job last season will be reporting to spring training auditioning for starting positions.

There's no shortage of pitching for the Red Sox this year...but I'm rooting for Mr. Submarine to make the team or be called-up at some point in the season. It woud be fun. But I am saying this in January.

Had A-Roid continued his legal challenge I have no doubt that a Federal Judge would have granted him an injunction permitting him to report to Spring Training.

But, that would have been a Pyrrhic Victory for him as it would have opened an avenue to the Yankes to void the $100M remaining on his silly contract.

I get to see a Giants game in May. May 7, when they play the Pirates in PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Thank you again lleechef for the tickets. I hope my Giants gear won't cause too many problems while I'm sitting behind the Pirates dugout. Last time I got the tickets and we sat behind the Giants dugout, so I guess it's only fair that my Pirates-fan wife would want to sit with my enemies.

Oh, sure. An Iron City or Rolling Rock. Just what I've always wanted. Do they still make Duquesne? There's another one.

Because he's a Giants fan I'll buy him an Iron City Lite and a slice of Augustine's pizza.

Infortunately Duquesne ("The Prince of Pilsners") is defunct.  So are Silver Top Lager and Ft. Pitt ("Ft. Pitt, that's IT"!!).

Duquesne was my personal favorite, but at 18 what did I know?

Why not whip up some home-made Augustine's Pizza right now?

  1. Lightly toast one slice of WonderTM Bread.
  2. Spritz some PamTM on the underside.
  3. Apply a thin layer of HeinzTM Ketchup on top.
  4. Sprinkle a hint of oregano and garlic salt.
  5. Top with a few shakes of KraftTM Parmesian Cheese.
  6. 12 minutes on a cookie sheet @ 350.

Chances are at least 3 out of 5 that he'll like the real thing better!

Most cool.

I'll check Total Wine & Spirits down here as they carry IC and IC Light.  If not, it's on my list for the next pilgrimage to the 'Burgh.

In the meantime, I wish the Bucs would trade for Mitch Moreland and sign A.J. Burnett!

AJ Burnertt sure did raise his stock by going to a small market.

I can't wait to see the Red Sox gaudy World Championship ring blings & ceremony.

Good to know! I read the history and it brought back memories of not only Duquesne Beer but other brands of the time as well.

If that's not a glowing promotion of Pittsburgh I don't know what is!

But shouldn't it have fries on top?

Mrs. Chicken and I would like to visit PNC Park someday, probably after KC (this April), St. Louis, and Cleveland.
