There are plenty of places to get better dogs and beef sandwiches than at Portillo's..even the dogs from the carts are better than the ones he changed to several years ago....a way overrated place.

There are three food groups known to Chicagoans: hot dogs, pizza, and Italian beef. We all have our favorite hot dog and Italian beef stand. This post was intended to celebrate 50 years of Portillo's, who started his business in 1963 in a small shack and is now one of the most successful fast casual restaurants in IL. That is a great accomplishment!

I do love their Chicago Beef sandwiches. Out on the West coast it's the only good place to get their stuff. Good dogs too!

I love the Italian beef sandwiches at Portillo's, in fact the only ones that I like better come from Al's and Mr. Beef.

They certainly have caught on out here in the Valley of the Sun!
Don't care for their frozen, processed French fries though. They should take a page from 5 Guy's Book.

'scuse me if I'm just from New Jersey. But when I go to Chicago, the trip isn't complete without a visit to Portillo's for a hot dog 'run through the garden.'

Love Portillos's...the food is always consistent and good.  There's a great diversity on the menu so everybody gets what they want.  Been to most of the dog/beef stands in Chicago and while there are better, there's none cleaner or more consistent.  We visit often with three generations and everybody goes home happy!

Small world.  We were in Houston last week and I was discussing food with a friend there who travels a lot to Chicago.  He was raving about the Italian Beef at Portillos.  I was not familiar with them so I looked them up.  It turned out they are one block from Al's.  I agreed to try Portillos next time I'm in Chicago and he will try Al's so we can compare them.

I was in Chicago this summer, I thought Portillo's did a great job. The place was packed, the service at the counter was friendly. The Italian beef was good, just like I ordered it with sweet peppers dipped. The Chocolate cake with frozen custard was a welcome site. I wish we had one in my town. 50 years in the restaurant is like 200 years in any other business.............Great job...............pnwc

plb-do the comparison! I like Als au jus better as it has bits and pieces of the beef in it.
Don't get me wrong-Portillos is great-Bob drove thru Chicago a lot and brought loads of their beef home. Maybe I just got tired of it. But to me, the "gravy" as most places call it, makes the sandwich. We have two local places in Milwaukee-Martinos and Sammys. They both have good "gravy". Portillos had plain old beef broth, in my opinion.

I remember going to portillo's when it was a convereted popup camper and had a garden hose running to one of the nearby stores across thr parking lot off of north avenew but it had good food and that amd hard work made his bis. grow good on him
