Baltimore question

So I came across this thing called 'Old Fashioned Sour Onions' that seems to be a Baltimore thing.  The product page for a company that makes them reads like a testimonial.  Like pickled eggs, they are sold sometimes in taverns.  Can someone from Baltimore that is familiar with them explain them to me?  How do you eat them; alone or with something else?

    Sour onions are very much a Balmer thing, you could buy them one at a time at the bar or at the corner stores and in gallon jars at the supermarket.  You can eat them whole (they are crunchy like a pickle rather than soggy) or slice them and eat them on sandwiches.

    Are they anything like the pickled cocktail onions (pearl) which you can buy at the grocery? I used to like them as a young person but now they are often too strong for me.

    If you follow the link you'll see that is a gallon jar so the size of the onion is considerably larger than a cocktail onion.  Speaking of cocktail onions, I drink gibsons but it is difficult to get a good cocktail onion.  They used to be in a salt brine but most now are preserved in vinegar.  Salt brine onions are very good but he vinegar has ruined it for me. Every brand that I've used has switched over Red Mill, Dell's and now Cosmo's. I now buy Cosmo's and drain the vinegar and replace with water and salt and repeat about 8 times to get a reasonably decent onion.

    Do they come in the stores in anything less than 1 Gallon?  I live about an hour away from Baltimore and would love to try them someday......anyone know who carries them?

    Here's a link to another purveyor, also a gallon.  They are out of Jersey and also pickle eggs,  sausage and pigs feet and knuckles.

    Because of their large size, I've never seen them in a jar smaller than a gallon.  Attman's Deli on E. Lombard Street has a barrel full of them.  Add some coddies, crackers and mustard and you have a quintessential Baltimore lunch.  The Lucky's Superette convenience stores all across town always had a jar of them at the sandwich counter, but most of those closed a couple of years ago.  There is still a Lucky's on Fort Avenue and I think still one in Halethorpe, but I haven't been to them for years.  All Mars Supermarkets have the gallon jars from Sun of Italy and they often will sell them separately at the deli counter.

    Only a Baltimoron would eat these things.
    And I was born there so I am a moron.
    I rue the day I had one.
    But they were at every place you went to just sitting on the counter.
    Who could resist?
    Perhaps now that I'm older?

    I assume that the onions are large-sized pickled onions and I like pickled cocktail onions. I lived in Baltimore for 14 months as an infant, Zagnut. Does that count? In other ways, I am often a moron.

    I've lived in Baltimore for 57 years and I've never had a pickled onion. I had a coddy once about 40 years ago and I was underwhelmed. There are certain traditional foods that appeal to a dwindling group of eaters.
