We have an official ruling by a Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Chicago's deep dish pizza isn't really pizza. Justice Antonin Scalia says that while it is "very tasty," pizza it's not.

Regardless of what it is, I have had it many times and it is very very tasty.  I stayed at Rosemont many times close to O'Hare and I always got a deep dish whatever.  It took about 45 minutes to prepare and it was worth it.  I could eat a small.

Need I point out the obvious?
Mr. Justice Scalia is of Italian descent.

What's with people describing Chicago deep-dish pizza as casserole? Have these people ever had casserole? They're not even remotely alike.

I had one once. I don't really thing it's a good thing to call it a casserole. A casserole is a good thing.

I've made deep dish pizza. It has more in common with casserole than Neapolitan pizza that's for sure. It bakes like a casserole.

Even if I don't understand the "overarching theme" of this website I really love so much, my Italian love of real pizza won't allow me to categorize deep dish as regular pizza. I've had it, I "like" it, but by most definitions of pizza, this product isn't pizza. Scalia(Italian!!) is correct.I'm not maligning it or casseroles. I eat and like both(Ok,I love a good casserole). I'm just strongly agreeing with the topic here. It's just my opinion, an opinion based on 68 years of eating every type of pizza all over the world, but still an opinion. And I'll continue my research by eating as much of my favorite food as I can get my grubby hands on!!!

Love Chicago deep dish pizza.  Have only had it a few times but it hokked me and I do think of it as pizza.  Maybe it's not the pizza with which I am most familiar (tomato pie), maybe it's not the pizza I grew up eating in Central NY (thick, party-cut squares) and maybe it's not the pizza that surrounds me now in NYC (Neopolitan), but to me, it's pizza nonetheless.

It's true: New Yorkers eating up deep dish

I have no idea who Emmett could possibly be talking about: "But I think it's pizza, and if a jerk from Connecticut wants to come in and say it's not pizza, look, I got more important things to worry about."

Just like Slick Willie asking "what is the definition of 'is'?", what is the definition of 'flat'?

I like pizza, be it New York, Chicago, Neopolitan, Sicilian, matzoh (less than one month and counting), pita, bagel or whatever the case may be.

And since today is pi day (3.14)  I'm gonna have pizza pie and pecan pie.

......and some of the "thin crust" is more like a cracker with some sauce and cheese on it. I like it all, and the differing styles make it fun when you are passing through a new town. "you say tomaaato, I say tohmato"

The guy making a bad pie doesn't stay in biz long.  Here in Mass we are lucky to have LOTS of very good independent shops. Some make deep dish,,,,,,some thin,,,,,some both. Some parts of the country are not so lucky.

I don't care if it is Neapolitan, Sicilian, thin, thick, tavern style, NY, Chicago, Milwaukee, Gary or was it Cleveland,  round, rectangle,  only that it is good and good comes in many forms. (and that it has onions).

I'm not crazy about pizza.  Never had deep dish and I doubt I would like it.  When I do eat pizza I prefer thin crust with very little topping and baked in a brick oven.

Pizzerole is delicious - with the ingredients, how could it not be?

My only complaint is that it is too filling.  I can remember one memorable piece I had back in the '80's at the now-closed Geppeto's in Georgtown (on M near the Biograph).  Good as it was I couldn't reach for the second piece.

One of the best trends in pizza is the spread of coal (or) wood-fired brick ovens across America.  Now, nearly every metro area (even Phoenix!) has great pizza a Napoli readily available.

Now that'z a pizza pie!
