Hi guys,
With the Cincy chili crawl fast approaching, I think now is a decent time to start brainstorming about possible locations for a Roadfood get-together in the summer.  This would be similar to the Cincy trip.  We pick a city and we eat until we start sweating lol!

Now I do not even know how much demand there is for a summer trip, so please post here if you would be interested.  I am still a Roadfood rookie; therefore, I am hoping someone else with take the lead on organizing this if it happens.

Since it seems like a lot of us live in or near the Midwest, the cities that I think we should consider are St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit, and Nashville.  What do you think?  I am flexible as to time and place.  Please post your ideas.

As for when we should do this, I was thinking June, July, or August.  September is too close to the fall bus tour.

Danny, I like the way you think.  You have some really good suggestions there.  I know there has been talk in the past about a possible get together in Detroit, but it never materialized.

What about somewhere in New England?  The beach, lobsters, steamers, fried clams and shrimp and scallops, chowdah...........sounds like summer to me!  Then a clam pie to top it all off!

Cliff,
I already had you and Gregg penciled in for this trip before I started this thread haha.

lleechef,
New England would be awesome, but I am worried about low turnout considering we would be all the way on the east coast.  Regardless, I would gladly go.

1bbqboy,
KC is a big yes for me!  We could eat enough delicious bbq there to induce the meat sweats

I'm crossing my fingers for New England, and the only reason  why is because with upcoming trips, I  simply don't have the time or $$ to go elsewhere

JRP,
I am a diehard White Sox fan; however, I do not despise the Cubs like most of my fellow sox fans do.  I actually hope the Cubs finally win a championship soon as long as they aren't playing my Sox in the World Series (a century long drought is just sad).

Buddy,
Believe me, I have been following the Sheboygan thread with great interest.  I would love to join you guys, but the month of May is very busy for me.  Still working on it...

Ed,
If I remember correctly, I think San Diego was being discussed as a possible candidate for the official Roadfood bus tour that occurs in the fall.  This is an unofficial Roadfood gathering we are trying to put together over the summer.

We should actually stay away from any city on the West Coast since there is a strong chance the bus tour will happen in one of those cities.  What do you guys think of Nashville as a possible location for this?  Hot and spicy chicken, meat and three's, pie (you reading this Cliff? PIE! )...

This is very difficult!  In a good way...

And don't miss Smoke Day/Pie Day at my place on May 24. You can find threads from the previous parties in the Roadfood forums that will give you an idea of the event.

Ah, well, for a proper buttered lobster roll, which originated in Milford, Connecticut at a place called Perry's on the Boston Post Road, you have to go to Connecticut.

Clearly Rhode Island would be the obvious choice. The Center of it all. Newport, Providence, an hour from Boston, 90 minutes from Boston's North Shore..40 minutes from Mystic CT 90 minutes from New Haven, great Beaches.
If we time it right, we can even go to Providence's waterfire

I think if this summer get together happens, it will have to be somewhere in the Midwest.  I just think that the turnout will be very low if we go too far West or too far East

Kansas City has been mentioned a few times. As far as I know, I am the most active local on the board these days so I'll volunteer to put together the tour if we have a consensus that Kansas City is the place to go. I will say that airfares are almost always very affordable. However, wherever we decide to go, it would be a good idea to make sure that it is not the same location that the Fall tour is going to.

Bill, you'd be sad to see Jimmies today. No more going up to the windows to order. No more Sal Gagliardi (Jimmie's son) smiling and taking your order. No more Tony splitting and grilling the Roessler's hot dogs (heck, no more Roessler's) and making the lobster rolls. No more fried clams in the cardboard clam box. Jimmies is now a wholly enclosed seafood restaurant. No fun at all.

I'm brand spankin' new here, but I've been into roadfood since forever (and it shows).  I second (or third) that Providence is the perfect base.  In addition to food (obviously), it has a pretty solid craft brewery community and is easily accessible by the high road (as in flying in).

And if anyone is looking to combine fall color with your seafood, check out Nova Scotia.  I did a whirlwind (3,000 mile) tour around the province and Prince Edward Island.  They have both a chowder crawl and a wine festival (who know?) in September and October.

The whole summer idea definitely did not fall apart.  After speaking with a few people in Cincinnati, I've narrowed down the list of candidates to these three:  Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Providence.  Personally, I would be happy traveling to any of these cities during the summer to eat.  Once we agree on a location we can start looking at specific dates.

Providence and Rhode Island in general has the best restaurants in the country. Just ask one million folks, even if I try to argue the fact they all point at me and say that I'm nuts. Even my coworker from Nebraska says our restaurants blow away anything she's ever had in the mid west. My other coworker, who is now handling permanent CAT duty in Cleveland says she wishes she was back in Rhode Island because she misses the restaurants. Even after recommending several Roadfood restaurants to her, including Sokolowski's, Balaton and the Flat Iron, she still says the food in Rhode Island is so much better.

Providence should definitely be the place to hit this summer.
