Hubby and I had the extremely good fortune of finding a nice supply of morel mushrooms over the weekend, and I'm wondering how to go about drying a few. Any suggestions?

Mamaw Smith who lives next door and the Sundancer found several morels growing right beside a shady place on the road in front of our house. I cannot suggest how to dry them cause we never let them last that long.

Cindyloo, I hv dried about 3 bu. of morels this spring. After eating all we cud fresh I take them & put on newspaper and gently bang to get dirt & critters out, then cut in 2 lenghwise and spread out on newspaper and turn all the fans u can on and dry them fast so they don,t mold. Don't wash them at all. U do that with first water when u reconstitute them. Put as many as u will need in a jar or dish with lid, cover with water and shake good. Throw water away and cover with clean water and let stand til tender, the broth is delicious for gravy or sauce. We luve the dried ones in scrambled eggs as the flavor really comes thru.By the way, I'm zman's Mom, & I'm in beautiful western Ia. and we hv lots of wooded hills that still hv wild flrs u wudn't believe

I'm not too sure about drying the shrooms... Eat them while I can get them!!! ha ha.. Talked with a hard core 'shroom hunter last week while down in Knightstown, Indiana and his tip was look for dead (fallen) elm trees... Thats where you'll find a vast stock of them in the spring... But one of my employees came back with a grocery bag full yesterday (NO, he didnt share), but asked for some recipes... I did a quick web search and found the following link to be tasty! http://www.theforagerpress.com/community/cnyms/recipes.htm Not sure about everyone elses neck of the woods, but they're producing big time here in West Michigan right now! Thank you all for your suggestions. We've eaten as many fresh as we can, and I think I'll try the fan-drying method on the few that are left.

We found them in NE Iowa, near dead elms were the best places. They were most plentiful under the trees that were just starting to let go of their bark. I have lots of scratches from brambles on my hands and wrists, but those morels are definitely worth it!

And it was so fun to spend a few hours tromping about in the woods. We really enjoyed the day.

My favorite part of morel hunting is the copperheads. I gather morels for friends and family. I can't eat the things -- allergy, you know.

Copperheads? Snakes? EEEEWWWWWW!
Too bad about the allergy thing, they are really delectable little morsels.
When I lived in Michigan (May is Morel Month in Michigan!) my ex mother-in-law would wash them, halve them, then put them on racks in an oven with just the pilot light on. Dried them nicely.

Yep, snakes. Copperheads and morels seem to come out at the same time each year. You know it's dangerous to reach for a mushroom when you smell cut cucumbers.

I used to cook morels all the time for my wife and kids. They always preferred them sauteed in some butter and olive oil.

Luckilly I never ran across a copperhead or any other snake while picking morels in Michigan! That would've been the end of my mushroom picking days! Can't stand snakes! BLEEECCCHHH!
Copperheads smell like cut cucumbers? Really? Glad I live in AK where we are snake-less.
