Probably the best way to learn Bass is to play in a Blues band and plug in the differnt patterns for the chords.

Now you got to get back to the Ridge in Nevada County and get on KVMR!

I'm, LOVIN IT!!!--and fortunatly--living next door to a couple that are BOTH Music Hall of Famers, bass players and teachers--i get a lot of help and we play together often---plus we have a blues jam twice a month and since i am on the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame--i get to play and learn from some pretty amazing folks--not many beginners get to hang out with the likes of Tony Mathews--who played guitar for Ray Charles for 18 yrs and Little Richard for 7--or Watermelon Slim--who got SIX Handy nominations this year---and then living next door to and hanging out with DC Minner--who is in The Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame---the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame and the Okla. Blues Hall of Fame---and another one that i cant remember--well we talk theory a lot!---and his wife Selby is my fromal bass teacher. SHe also has me play bass with a side group she has--the Rentiesville YaYas--which includes my wife and another lady friend of ours---Dominca Lovera--whose husband owns Lovera's Italian Market in Krebs Ok.that i have talked about before. It really is a dream come true and i can tell all of you---if you dont play anything---it NEVER too late to start!

I get together with a pal twice a week to hone our drinking and complaining skills. In order to keep the beer from running out too quickly we mess around with music between gulps. I play bass guitar and do rhythm programming and hollering. My pal plays guitar and keyboards.

Here's a fun fact. While bassists are the redheaded stepchildren of the band (bass strings cost a lot more than guitar strings, bass players don't get all the swell toys guitarists do, and the only bassist to have ever gotten stage attention was the guy who did that fretless solo on You Can Call Me Al, off of Paul Simon's Graceland), it turns out that there are a lot more guitarists than bassists. I've been cruised twice by guitarists in the last year. ("Do you want to get up on stage and make people happy, or do you want to sit in the studio and beat off?" "The latter.") So if you want to be in a band, learn bass or drums -- there's always an opening.

Oh, and I'm trying to learn some music theory by playing around with the Reason synth program. If you're interested in experimenting with synthesizer music, get reason. It's cheap, it runs well, and it does everything from MIDI to loops.

      Tiki,
I started off playing upright Bass when I was in the orchestra at school.
I switched to Electric bass some years later and have sort of tinkered around with it ever since.
I learned to play drums about 20 years ago and it was certainly good to see how things work from both sides of a rythym (sp?) section, it certainly made my bass playing a lot tighter.
I did have a go at trying to play a guitar (6 string) once but I never took to it, the strings were too close together and snapped too easily.
      Cheers,
      Mike.

Know what you mean--not a big fan of those tiny little strings----although---i do have a lap steel that i am messing with--open tunings and a steel bar--no trying fit fat fingers in skinny spaces!

i played alto sax for 15 yrs, before i switched up to the bass.
it was weird at first, but i was on a time line, as oru group had a first-performance date, and our guitartist left, so our bassist switched to guitar, i switched to bass, we picked up a new singer, and lead guitarist, and in three weeks, we had our first gig. well, we did good, and picked up a few more dates, right away. next thing we knew, we were all over the uk. the next three yrs were a blur, but w/ played with some really big names. got to meet angus young, ozzy, and several others(we played a three day event). then, it came to a skreetching halt, as these great things often do. some of us moved back to the states, and started a new band. we toured the eastern seaboard, from ohio down to south carolina. great experience, but that too, ended.
i still have an ibanez, and a yamaha in the corner, with a fender amp. its still alot of fun, to jam with the radio, but its hard to find radio that plays good old head-banger, and old rock!
i guess you would have guessed it, seeing my screen name..lol
i will never forget, in uk, we did this outside gig, with some great names. anyway, when we were up, sookign out over the masses, you can see all this flying stuff. turns out, its 2liter plastic bottles with pee in them. lol yea, there were no johns, so the guys would pee in the bottles and throw them up front to hit people in the front rows..with pee...man, that was crazy

In my younger days, I played guitar in a few punks bands, spent some time in a reggae band or two.

I don't play much anymore but have managed to hang onto most of my eq.

I also blow blues harp, and occasionally hit a couple local bars in my area with a friend or two for open mic night, I enjoy playing blues harp more then I do guitar these days.
