It did get a little warmer this afternoon.  I fed the birds and did a quick look through the woods.....not a serious mushroom hunt.....and didn't see anything.  I'm going to get serious tomorrow.

Update from the mushroom club:

"walked over a mile of rocky ridge-bottom to find one Black Morel today. So it has begun. Weather forecast couldn't be better... sunny warm-up followed by more showers but temps staying warm. Beginning around Thursday, it should be real good. First time in a few years we've had good early-season conditions."

IF there are any in Michigan this year, they'll be late. Between record flooding and record low temperatures (measurable snowfall last night on top of the 11+ inches of rain we received over the last week), I just don't see it happening.

It was 85 here on Thursday and 28 this morning.  Not good.  Other Ohioans must be desperate too because the dried morels were all sold out at the grocery store yesterday to the tune of $8.99 for about 10 puny little things in a plastic package.

Michigan has almost dried out (the rivers are officially below flood stage right now, although still VERY high), and they promise we're finally done having snow. It could happen!

I was at the farmers market downtown Knoxville today and the mushroom guy found 250 a couple of days ago and sold them all in a matter of minutes this morning at $12.00 lb.  I was too late and I would have bought a lb.
He indicated the season was over for him yesterday.

I am calling The Mushroomery in Lebanon, OR. today. When I was there they were out of season on a lot but hopefully its better now. Morels, lobster mushroom, chantrelles and TRUFFLES were what I bought last time. If I score, you're all invited to a truffle party! I made fettucini with fresh lobster and shaved truffles. People were locking the pasta bowls!

Cut Morels in half, large ones in quarters or thirds. Place in bowl of water and clean. Just slosh them around a little. Place outside up on paper towels and pat dry. Sprinkle with Old Bay. Place in large zip lock bag with a cup and a half of of All Purpose Flour and 1/2 cup corn meal. Shake until coated. Remove from bag and tap off excess. Place in medium hot preheated skillet hollow side down. Press lightly. Cook until flour browns and flip each. Once both sides have browned flip around in pan until done. I like them still a little soft inside. I have cooked thousands of Morels and the water clean has never made them soggy. If pan is not preheated enough you will have issues. If butter starts getting hot add a little vegetable oil to raise the burn temp. For a full pan you might use a third of a stick of butter. I have tried olive oil but they do not taste as good. If you like Old Bay you can add more when you take them hot out of the skillet.
Enjoy....Russ
