muffuletta sandwich in New Orleans
Thu, 03/5/09 3:17 PM
( permalink)
Hi guys and girls..... My husband's company has him travelling from Tuesday through Thursday every week and now they have added like six more states to his territory, Louisiana being one of them. I told him to make a roadfood adventure out of all of his trips to kind of lighten things up. So here is my question to you all.... where can he get a good muffuletta sandwich or any other new orleans specialty while he is there? He is heading out this Tuesday and he carries a portable gps for all the rental cars.

The Central Grocery. Have him bring home some of the olive mix. They sell it by the bottle.

Seriously. That's one of those RF dishes that haunts me with how far away it is. All other muffulettas pale in comparison.

Blue, he can take it over to the nearby statue that France gave New Orleans. There are some benches to sit on. Oh, and tell him not to forget the hungry mice that live in the bushes. They will be very grateful for a few tidbits of Muffuletta. Oh, and ask him to get the recipe for that olive relish while he is there. :~) And oh, I always get a "gator sausage on a stick" at Central Market. It tastes great while looking around the market. Nancypalooza is correct Central Grocery has the best muffuletta. I had always wondered what all the fuss was about until I had a muffuletta there.

I haven't sampled many muffulettas in New Orleans, but I can say there is no comparison between the many muffulettas i've had in Maryland and what I tasted at the Central Grocery. Even my wife, who hates sandwiches, loves the muffuletta at Central Grocery

Central Grocery is closed Sun-Monday. Will he have time to pick it up Tuesday before he leaves? If not, he could try Frank's a couple doors down, which I think is just as good. Personal favorites of mine would be Zapp's Crawtator potato chips and Hubig' chocolate pies (they make several flavors, but I think the chocolate is the best, and these are small, usually selling for about .89-$1) which can be found either at the Walgreen's on Decatur Street near Jackson Square, and there's a grocery store called Rouse's on the corner of Royal and St. Peter Street. I would also recommend creole mustard, and Boscoli olive salad(if he doesn't find the muffalata, or just wants to make them at home). All the Easter candy is out right now and Elmer's heavenly hash candy is a favorite, and they now make a heavenly hash dark chocolate Easter egg. Some people like Elmer's goldbrick, and pecan eggs as well, and sell for about 2 for a $1 at Walgreen's right now. Tell him to pick up a 1-lb. bag of Camellia dried red kidney beans, or any other types you might want to try like Navy, Great Northerns, or large limas( another personal favorite)at the Rouse's grocery. Well, that's everything I can think of - oh yes, there's a couple of candy stores along Decatur St., and I would buy some "creamy-style" pralines for the folks back home.

bh- I directed my response as if you're husband was staying in a French Quarter hotel without thinking. Other than the pralines, if he is staying anywhere in the NO area - he can find the foods mentioned at Wal Mart, Winn Dixie, or Rouse's.

Warm! And the scratch-made cocktails are GREAT! Or, at least they were in 1990 on our first anniversary.

MiamiDon I have been to the Napoleon House several times while wandering the quarter. The one time I had their warm Muffuletta it was good. Just not as good as a cold Muffuletta from Central Grocery. I was surprised as I usually do prefer a hot sandwich over a cold one. The cocktails are awesome! I did have a Pimms cup the house specialty.

Oh, Nancy... a little Bay Corn might make almost anything better! I do not remember any in the Central Grocery olive relish though. :~) I have always wanted to try a warm Muffuletta. Then I could say what way I like best. There used to be a little cart at the end of Central Market that had great egg rolls. Anyone know if it still there? And, anyone know the name of that statue I mentioned earlier? Joe

I too was surprised that I preferred the cold sandwich from the Central grocery over the hot one att he Napoleon House. That said, theirs was a fine sandwich as well and I completely agree that it is a fine place for a cocktail. I did my research into anothere specialty-Planters Punch.

The only place I'v ever had a Muff was at Central Grocery. Didn't see a need to try anyplace else. They used to have 5# bags of Red Pistacxhio's from Iran there. Don't imagine they have them now. Far superior to domestic Pistachio's!

Love the muffulettas from the Central Grocery so much that the last time I was in NO I bought one to go on my last day there. The people around me on the jet home weren't too happy. I bet they were jealous. I like drinking a Barq's along with my Muffuletta. When I first started going to NO Barq's was just called Barq's. Root Beer wasn't mentioned anywhere, just Barq's. Barq's also tastes better when in NOLA.

Thanks Belle! It's a good place to sit and eat a Muffuletta. I hope my mice buddies, that live in the bushes there, are doing OK. The prefer the Central Grocery Muffuletta. Hmm, that is probably about the only kind they get. Although.. there was a place near the grocery that served a warm Muffuletta. Joe

I've vote for Central. Napoleon House is ok. Never have tried Frank's - maybe for Superbowl! One place not mentioned, and not downtown is Nor Joe's which is also an import company.

Yeah z, you need a car for Nor-Joe's - off Metairie Road. Some people swear it's better than Central and I have to say the filling is impressive(they use pancetta), but don't like the way their olive salad tastes. Where's Myplace?
