new holiday dessert idea Wed, 12/22/10 10:13 PM (permalink)
I love "playing with my food" and love to just throw things into my crockpot and see what happens. Today I cleaned by fridge out of fruit (chopped apples, pears, cranberries), added some raisins, poured on some rum, a generous sprinkle of cinnamon and some lemon zest and a dab of honey.

Well it was delish! I poured it warm on some plain Greek yoghurt, but imagined it would also be great on vanilla ice cream, pound cake, etc.  The warm/cold was great.

I was in Marches area of central Italy a few years ago visiting relatives and was enthralled by the morning food: warm bread with apple/rum compote. This is my seasonal take off on that. Maybe it also need a few nuts?

It sounds wonderful! I think a sprinkle of nuts before serving is a great idea.

When we grew up in the 50's, mom made a dessert called "mush",,,a version,I guess, of ambrosia,,sort of. We're making it this year again because my kids love it,,,,
Soak a package of marshmallows by placing a large can of Fruit cocktail(heavy syrup and all) over them. Let them soak over night....Remove marshmallows, and smush in a big servingt bowl with a fork 'til creamy...return fruit cocktail to marshmallows...add one small container of sour cream and stir thoroughly..return to refrigerator to get cold, and serve....It is soooo great...Notice this version has no coconut.....I guess you could add it, or in other ways vary it, but that's what for 60 years our family has called Christmas mush!!My mom had eight brothers and sisters, and all 8 made this. Where they got the recipe,I don't know...but today we've spread around the country...and many new generations will be having "mush" for dessert. Try it and join the club!!!!

If you're going to do nuts, I would toast up some hazelnuts in the broiler, and wait til they cool enough to be handled & chop em up. Don't throw them into the mix, grill some slices of pound cake, put your mixture over it, put some whipped cream on that & sprinkle the chopped toasted hazelnuts over the whipped cream.

                        oooh, sounds good!
And, they have some pretty good food in Ancona/Falconara, where my relatives live. I remember a huge plate of tiny grilled fish, right from the Adriatric, with a nice salad, warm bread and two bottles of wine, a "white" wine (local Verdicchio) and a "black" wine, which is what they called "red" wine. mmmmmmm.....
                        Have you been there?

I have not, would love to. Still trying to wrap my head around an ancestor of mine walking from Forca de Montegallo to San Benedetto just to see the ocean & still deciding to move to Pennsylvania.

The thing with the grilled fish sounds amazing!
