newish NYC streetcart food

Halal, wonderfully spiced dark chicken meat, served with rice and salad is all the rage in NYC now. Sammy's and Rafiqui are two names on carts to look for. Love this stuff!

It's not remotely new. I've been working in the city for 18 years, and they've been around the whole time. I agree on the Rafiqui recommendation. His carts are the best. My favorite is the lamb/chicken combo with lots of "white sauce".

Went to Rafiqi's cart in Chelsea yesterday, had the lamb gyro with everything! Fabulous and cheap! Less than $5, including a bottled water!

Rafiqi's carts say they were written up in the New York Times. I wonder what the NYT said.....

quote: Very cool sites! I haven't been to NYC in years. When I was there, it was minus 11 degrees and no carts were out. Do the carts open in very cold weather now? I'd love to try the curry cart that was reviewed here by the Sterns several years ago.

There's always streetfood; always more in good weather. Street food can be a push cart, a cart where the vendor is 'inside' the cart, or a truck of varying size. I'm not sure what the territorial issues may be if they only frequent a location. There are now carts that only show up with breakfast stuff and my be gone by 11am; but the lunch guys are there in the morning too getting ready and reserving their spot. They're all long gone by the evening rush. I get something from 'Barbara Wall St Whiz' (pushcartnyc) at least once a week. She now has a cart where she and an assistant work from inside the cart. Got to go lay down, the meds are kicking in.
