I think it's a great idea, but I already have a question.  Is it in the interest of celebrities or roadfoodies?????  If it's the former, hope I don't make an appearance for quite some time.

I didn't know we had celebrities here!  Who are you in your real life, if you don't mind telling?

With all due respect, if you see a thread title about a passing of a celeb, sports star or other, just pass on it and don't read it, simple slolution. There are many thread titles in various forums I don't bother visiting

Even if I don't read the obituary threads they still clutter up this forum .

I do not often frequent the obituary threads.  The Billy Mays thread reminded me of why.  Invariably, some dingaling will post something idiotic.  I am not really sure why, though I suspect that the anonymity of the Internets has something to do with it.  I can only figure that it is a small man who would take an opportunity to befoul someone's memory on the day they died - or the days immediately following.  Perhaps, in many cases, these are the same people who fear that their own passing will be marked by no one.

Unfortunately, I don't see how creating a seperate off-off-off-topic forum for such threads will solve the problem.  Those who choose to post memorials will still do.  Those who choose to post snarky remarks will still do.  Our option remains the same - we can choose not to look.

That's the way to solve a problem - ignore it and it'll go away...

I didn't say it would go away - but, I don't see how your suggestion makes it "go away" either - it just moves it somewhere else.  I guess you would have the opportunity to filter out the new obituary section automatically - but, isn't that just the same thing as not reading the threads that you don't want to?

I participate in a different forum (there are topics out there other than food) in which there's a sub-forum within the Off-Topic section entitled "In Memorium".  In that sub-forum, each passing celeb has his or her own thread. The entire group of which is easily avoided by those who care not for whom the bell tolls.

How do you decide what topics clutter a miscellaneous and off topic forum?  Be specific.

Pops: "You see, I'm the Decider,,," (statement borrowed from a Texan we wish we could forget).

And what SPECIFICALLY did I decide? Jackson,Fawcett,Mays,McNair,Casey,Malden,Saxon, et.al.

Ellen: I guess a necrology site is useful, if one is fixated on celebrity deaths...

TTM: Thanks for the twenty-five-cent-Lucy VanPelt psychology session .

Why anyone except his closest loved ones, would want to mourn the passing of a cheap huckster, carnival barker, and charlatan foisting crap on the American suckers and insomniacs is beyond me.

                                    Cheers, John

Why anyone except his closest loved ones, would want to mourn the passing of a cheap huckster, carnival barker, and charlatan foisting crap on the American suckers...is beyond me.

You forgot that Robert McNamara was also Secretary of Defense. A little respect, please.

Yeah, McNamara killed 58,000 Americans, and disrupted the lives of another quarter of a million , but he never cluttered up our Miscellaneous forum...

                                                Cheers, John

                                                  John,
Time to mellow out a bit. All the rants- Good and Not so good- won't even be read by any of the characters everyone is either cheering,  panning, or mourning. We're Just tossing Chaff into the desert wind, my friend.

Now making 'food-related' comments like "Mays and Michael, the New M & M's" might fit here...or Perhaps a Modern "3 M" Company (McNamara,Mays,Micheral).... I am reaching a bit but I am really worn out from the collective needs of the media to drown us in the "Eternal Grief Images".

Al, your counsel is always appreciated, and even, sometimes, useful. I hereby declare an end to my side of this thread.

                                                    Cheers, John

I remember getting a lot of flack when I first became active on roadfood when I started a thread on the death of Jerry Orbach. People react to celebrity deaths in interesting ways depending on what their feelings about the dead person are. I respect john's dislike for them but I suggest that all who dislike such threads skip them. The recent spate of celebrity deaths has made this a bit more of an issue which will eventually ebb.
