More sugar in the dough I think. Gives it that big rise fast but that's why I don't like it. Way to sweet for me personally.

Maybe you should do a chain pizza survey and let us know what YOU think.
After all you asked us what we think..

    food10,

Papa John's, like all chain pizzas are used by busy parents who have kids that need to be fed like a nest of hungry birds. It is quantity, not quality. A good pizza parlor does not have to offer such deals as these chains. Here in the east coast, with a pizza joint on every block, it is hard to believe that these chains bother to compete. I think that there is a Domino's in my town, but Papa John's has closed....

When in NYC, I am surprised to see that Sbarro does have branch or two in the city; one at the base of the Empire State Building. It does a good business as the touristas don't know better and seeing this, think that IT does mean that it is authentic. As far as chain pizzas go, I would have a Sbarro's if I was at a mall in Podunk and there was nothing else. But that is the reason for this site. To prevent you from eating mall food in these small towns when Joe's Diner has a killer burger or pork sandwich.

I'm spoiled as I can be in New Haven in 20 minutes for Pepe's and Modern's pizza. Oddly for the locals of that town, Modern is the most recommended over Pepe's and Sally's. My brother will be flying in from California next week and near recently reviewed Pepe's in Fairfield. We are going to meet up and try that place.
On another note, I did go to Dexter's Dog House on Tuesday. Nice place, good chili, and the owner was greatly surprised when I told her about the good review that this site provided for the joint. She wrote down the site's address on her notepad and afterward was genuinely interested in my opinion as to whether the food was as good as the review said. I told her to go and print up the review and post it on the outside, nobody will disagree...

Papa John's sucks much harder than Domino's. At least Domino's uses mozzarella and their sauce has some flavor in it.

I'm ashamed to say.. Papa John's started across the river in Indiana... but he did build a beautiful stadium here in Louisville for the University of Louisville football team.. and his pizza does suck.. found a great place no more then 10 mins from me called Vito's.. NY style pies that are awesome.

Domino's uses a blend of mozzarella and jack cheeses.

I dont eat any chain pizza. You would have to force me to eat it under threat of death. I have tried them and wont do it again.
I have given them all a fair try.
That is why I can say what I say.
    They all suck. (IMHO)
I tried Papa Johns white spinach pizza about 2 years ago.
Wont, dont and DONT have to eat that crap. (any chain pizza)
There are too many mom and pop places to get good pizza to waste my time on the above mentioned places.
    IMHO.....

I agree that places like Domino's, Pizza Hut and Little Caesar's are no good. However, not all chains are bad. I like Barnaby's. And it's been a long time since I've had them but I liked Jake's Pizza.

Papa John's pizza is not inedible, its just devoid of flavor. It's kind of like a pizza made at home using hot roll mix for the crust- not horrible, but nothing I'd look forward to either.

I avoid chain pizzasa whenever I can. Dominos is the worst around here. No taste. Pizza Hut in our town is acceptable. Papa Johns is no good for a diabetic since the sweetness of the sauce destroys your blood sugar count. Little Luigis is one of the only places around here I am willing to go for pizza. Real Italian people cooking real Italian pizza. Never had a bad one yet. I do want to try Electric City Brewing Company, another local restauraunt that supposedly makes good pizza.

We have the usual chains here in Anchorage which we too avoid at all cost. My favorite place is The Moose's Tooth http://www.moosestooth.net/index2.htm which is also a brew pub.

I prefer PapaJohns over the other chains and the dipping sauces add a nice touch, the only other chain pizza place I eat at is CeCe's, there's something to be said about an all you can eat pizza buffet with a large choice even if its mediocore at best and the little ones like the game room.

Luckily there's a couple of decent small pizzerias locally to chose from, the best IMHO is AL's but with 3 stores thats verging on a chain as well..

I would much rather eat pizza at a brew pub where I could shoot some darts or play pool while munching on some home made 'za, and drink a local brew....as opposed to those other choices?
That sounds like a cool place, Llechef!

I've only had Papa John's once. Mom loved it. Dad liked it. I was less impressed with it. I'm a pepperoni lover, and the pepperoni was just horrible on that pizza. The sauce was horrible too.

Note to self: Stick with IMO's as much as possible...or heck even Pizza Hut does better then PJ.

I find that hard to believe. - if it was my office anyways.
We're all foodies and pizza snobs on this site, but in my office, half of my co-workers - who I also consider friends, don't know the difference between good pizza and bad pizza.

Although, I felt really good about myself this Spring when our annual pizza party came around. I told the organizer to NOT get any chain pizza and suggested a local pizza shop that I knew was much better.

He very happy with my suggestion and admitted how much better the pizza was. He told me that next year, he would definately NOT order Dominoes or Papa John's. Most of the office noticed that the pizza was better this year, but not many read the box to realize that it wasn't from Dominoes.
I converted one guy, but I have many more to go.

I can eat regular Domino's pizza when I have to, but I once got some pizza from a Domino's express at the Atlanta Airport. I literally could not finish it for fear of vomiting.

What I hate about the chains is it's either a salt fest (Pizza Hut) or a sugar fest (Papa John's). We only have Little Caesar's, Pizza Hut, and Papa John's here and no mom & pop pizza places. If we had a Sir Pizza here that would be my choice of the chains.

What would be hard to believe in our office is that anyone would throw away free food, no matter how inedible. They'll fight over the box it came in if it has sauce and cheese on it.

We refer to the crowd as the cake cattle. A vulturous group that will hover over anything put out to eat, usually a tasteless sheet cake covered in that unearthly spackle icing that comes out of the same five gallon bucket.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who truly hates Papa John's pizza. I worked in a newsroom for a while, and one night one of the photographers brought one in to share. Most of it never left the box. A truly nasty product.

I don't hate it, but...PJ's is typical of most places now - way skimpy on the sauce, and overloaded on the cheese, which is a thick, gooey, slimy mess that comes off all at once when you bite into a slice. They also chintz you on the toppings. Definitely not a pie joint I frequent.
