Sounds like hard but fun work Defcom! Fowl appendages, lolol, I'm going to start calling them that when I serve em to the Grandzillas.

Ok, looks like we have it. Turkey wings will not work for a Buffalo style wing, due the their thick skin. Drumsticks on the other hand...?

We hit the road HARD promoting our little fowl appendages, and have a ball doing it! Myself and the wife have regular 9-5 jobs, but it seems we may be able to tell corporate America to stick it in a year or two, what a beautiful thought, traversing this great nation of ours cooking wings every step of the way!!!

Wow, great questions. As for the turkey wings, I tried them as well, and yeah, the thick skin is definitely a problem, they could have seconded as a rawhide bone for a dog. I would stick with smoking them in my opinion. Drumsticks on the other hand....

As for frozen wings, since my first post months ago, I have actually strayed away from them. I have found that Tyson or virtually any other brand that is 'ice glazed', are rather expensive. Look for a local restaurant supply (around here there are "Restaurant Depots"). Some require only a tax ID number to become a member, and you save a ton of $. Tyson usually sells a 7 pound bag for anywhere from $9-$11. Most of this weight is ice weight, and the wings are on the small side. At Restaurant Depot, we get "Jumbo Party Wings" (which are pre-cut wings and drummies) and are 2/3 bigger (much more meat) and cost about $1/pound (no ice weight), pretty good deal.

Also, from a safety perspective. Personally, I use a turkey fryer (usually multiples), and using ice-glazed wings is fairly dangerous (ice and 375 degree oil don't mix well). I have found the fresh wings cause MUCH less in the way of oil spattering and level rise. Frozen wings are good, having used them for many years, but from a cost effective and safety aspect, I have to say I'm bending towards the fresh now.

Ahh Derf, thanks for the imput. I didn't think about the thick skin issue. Hmm, a way to softed that shin? Maybe the way I cook hot chicken breasts. I just cook them with lots of hot sauce and butter, at high temp. The skin almost all melts off into the juice. I call wings or other chicken parts cooked this way " Cajun Stlye ". Nothin crispy when cooked like this.

Oh, now I know someone sells turkey wings. Maybe not frozen and spiced up Buffalo style though?

I tried to fry some turkey wings up myself from some I bought at the market. You wuold think they would work but I,ve found them to be REALLY tough. The skin is pretty thick on the wings and I almost lost a tooth. Then I tried to braise them in a little chicken stock and hot sauce. Again they were still tough. The best luck I've had with them is to buy them smoked and grill them slowly with your favorite sauce. Then use a knife to cut of edible pieces. Or just use them in soup.

I like the Tyson ones but they are more like $8.99 at my local Kroger's. I know they are cheaper at Walmart but there is not one as close. Kroger has their own brand which are about the same as the Tyson ones and they are around $6.

Field YW, and thanks for the interest in turkey wings. The way to find turkey wings is to look above the legs. . Actually, I have never seen them for sale by themselves. The legs yes, the wings no. I don't often get to Sam's, Costco, or Trader Vics though. I am way out in the boonies.

Welcome to roadfood Defcon! Your traviling wing thing is real neat looking! Hey, I can see that you are out on the road doing what needs to be done to promote your sauce. Only two years and your are diffenatly on the map, nice job! And, neat web site!

Rusty, the name DOES get your attention!

About frozen wings, someone here, whose opinion I respect, said they like Banquete wings beter than Tyson.

A question I asked somewhere was, has anyone ever tried turkey wings? And, does anyone sell them? Hey, grilled or smoked turkey legs are popular at the fairs. They even sell them at my local deli. Turkey hot wings, hmmm?

Wings are kind of obsession in our household. I used to just make them for the Superbowl, but end up breaking out 2 turkey fryers now at nearly all of our house parties. Hell, we had a summer blowout in August and I ended up cooking almost 140 pounds of the "fowl" meat.

Not sure if you're a wing person, but if you are, give it a shot, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. You figure a 1st & 2nd Place Scovie award, a Golden Chile and a 2nd Place at the Fiery Food Challenge, all in one year, we gotta be doin' somethin' right. The chemical bottle packaging is kind of a New Jersey thing, they're as common as soda/beer cans on the side of the road. LOL!

Wing Dings breaded chicken wings by Pierce. Though not necessarily "Buffalo" wings, they have the most exquisite breaded coating and I think would do wonderfully.

definitely agree with jellybear on that one.. TGIF's are a little pricey for the amount that you get.. TYSONS are the best bet.. and remember-- if they aren't hot enough you can always spice them up yourself...:)

Fridays are ok,But too pricey.Your best bet are Tysons.I think they come in a five pound bag and sell for 6.99.Get them at Sams or local grocery.

there are three groceries here with deli sections that all sell pretty good wings fresh made daily and ready to eat---i like them better then the f4rozen ones anyday!--of course i make my own blue cheese dip fror them!
