Extra cubanelles have just been added to the shopping list.
Re:New Jersey Italian Sausage (leethebard)

By the way, Italian frying peppers,Cubanelle, are great by themselves as a sandwich. Just fry them after cutting them in half lengthwise(in olive oil),turning once or twice. Let them get a little color, but don't burn. Done when they are soft. Salt and serve on the best crispy Italian bread you can find. Heaven!!!!!
Re:New Jersey Italian Sausage (Michael Hoffman)

Actually, a cubanelle pepper has a thinner wall than a banana pepper, and is usually less elongated and slender. And no, I do not do anything to them before frying, other than to cut them up and remove the seeds.

Oh, and cubanelles are much more mild than banana peppers.
Re:New Jersey Italian Sausage (Foodbme)

Michael Hoffman

I make mine with both hot and sweet sausage and with onions and cubanelle peppers, known to some as Italian frying peppers.

A pepper by any other name is still as sweet!
They're also sometimes called Banana Peppers and Poblano's and Anaheim's can be substituted.
Do you roast & peel your Cubanelle's before using them?
Re:New Jersey Italian Sausage (gostillerz)

There's a local company here that makes really good sausage, Uncle Charley's. I get extra hot, fry them up slow with onions, bell peppers, and hot Hungarian peppers. Sometimes cheese and sauce, sometimes not, but always on Breadworks bread. I make my own kielbasa, but for some reason, never did Italian sausage. I'm going to someday, and try cold smoking smoking it too. Do you guys think that'd be good, or too close to kielbasa or hot links?
Re:New Jersey Italian Sausage (agnesrob)

I also like to use both hot and sweet. Ialso use cubanelle and ripe bell peppers(the green ones remind me I've eaten them for hours) and sweet onion, sliced. I also like to add some homemade meatballs that I keep in the freezer for those who prefer a meatball sandwich. Slice up a few peppers and onion and put it into a crock pot with one 8 ounce can of tomato sauce...mix it up...then add 8 italian sausage links I use either Shop Rite Brand or A&P brand, both are good. Now....Do not mix the sausage into the peppers and onions,,,you dont want to get sauce on top of the sausages ...if you do then they wont brown. simply lay them across the top.....cover the crockpot and set on low for 6 hours then serve on your favorite roll. Bon Appetite~!
RE: New Jersey Italian Sausage (Tyrone)

I guess the best sausage would be the hottie at Syds. This was brought up somewhere else and I went into the whole early morning surf fishing in Seaside while the sausage places opened and the aroma wafted across the sand...ooohh MAN! I recapture the moment using a lg cast iron fry pan, a pound or 2 ot hot italian sausage and a couple green peppers and onions well lubricated with olive oil. After the sausage has been browned all over cover and reduce the heat so it all "sweats" together. A little tomatoe sauce can be added, just enough to coat not drown the ambrosia..

RE: New Jersey Italian Sausage (John Fox)

Tommy's is considered by many to be the best in the state for Italian Sausage. Total time warp of a place, a bonus. Appears to date from the 1930's.

Sorry I don't have the exact address handy, but coincidentally the Star Ledger did a writeup last week on the Sanitary Bakery, just a few doors down. Another time warp of a place. Both worth checking out. ---Ken

RE: New Jersey Italian Sausage (tiki)

quote:

quote:

Where can I get some excellent sausage and pepper sandwiches in the state?
