I didn't realize that Blizzards had been around earlier; very interesting. I very much remember their introduction in 1985. I was in graduate school and my apartment complex was across the street from a Dairy Queen. Believe me, I was often literally scraping up the change to afford a Blizzard as an occasional treat (the life of a poor graduate student!) It truly was a treat, and way back in those days, a Blizzard seemed sinfully indulgent.

And now it is 2008...and you can get a soft serve mix-in just about anywhere. Not quite the same!

RE: Dairy Queen's Blizzard 20th Birthday (dinerhotline)

Thanks for bringing up the subject. The Blizzards at DQ in the 60's and into the early 70's were in a milkshake cup (tall). They used to give you a long spoon as well as a straw to consume it. They were nothing like the current ones. Don't get me wrong, I like the Blizzards they have now, but you can get the same thing (under different names) in hundreds of other softserve places.

RE: Dairy Queen's Blizzard 20th Birthday (garryd451)

quote:

quote:

I agree, the only Fast Food place that come close is Culver's!

http://www.culvers.com/

Ha! The style of the Brazier nowadays gives it a clean, fresh and inviting look. I never thought Dairy Queen would leave the old roadside diner look; they did a nice job doing so. Dairy Queen now meets and exceeds other fast food restaurants with their menu. What other fast food restaurant can provide delicious ice-cream treats with a large (now more variety) food menu that meets the need of many consumers' variety of taste? Has anyone been to the latest: DQ Grill and Chill? It has a classic, warm and inviting atmosphere. Step up from the Brazier. They offer quesadillas, wraps, and other menu items not offered at the Braziers.
I love the Oreo Blizzard in vanilla ice-cream.

I agree, the only Fast Food place that come close is Culver's!

http://www.culvers.com/
RE: Dairy Queen's Blizzard 20th Birthday (FeedYourFace)

quote:

Dairy Queen has really improved their menu, image and quality in recent years. I was wondering what folks' favorite Blizzard combos are. My favorite is Reese's PB cup in chocolate ice cream. Mr. D-L and I like to ride around out in the country on a summer evening and share a Blizzard. I feed him every other spoonful while he drives, and I get to finish all the melty part in the bottom since it gets too drippy and messy to feed him at that point.

Has anyone ever ordered a Blizzard with DQ's frozen yogurt? I've never even tried their yogurt, but wondered if a Blizzard would have less calories made with it rather than the soft-serve.

RE: Dairy Queen's Blizzard 20th Birthday (emsmom)

I don't remember the Blizzards back in the 60's but I do remember them when they came out in 1985.
