THE COFFEE CUP ....You know that place has been around since I was a kid, many decades ago. I love to go to The Coffee Cup and I've tried about everything on the menu. My Mother is elderly and rather than cook she loves for me to take her up there for their delicious meatloaf, and the Liver Smothered with Onions that I didn't think I would care for but enjoyed. Their full breakfast menu is first rate, the steaks are better than at a chain and the place is generally packed so you can sit, drink coffee, enjoy a piece of pie and soak up some local flavor.

RE: Cauliflower (Adjudicator)

Athens... There are many down to earth roadfood places in this area and I hope to write everybody and tell you all about them. Athens, the county seat, is a small University town therefore there is quite a bit of diversity in the restaurants around here. Lots of excellent ones, some dirty dives, and of course chain-food city. After living in Tucson Arizona for 22 years I keep trying all the Mexican places but they are mostly horrible. The best one is the Burrito Buggy which is usually parked outside the Main Gate on Court Street in uptown Athens. What they lack in authentic flavor, they make up in spiciness. I love getting a burro there on a cold windy.

It's not Mexican, but head north on 33 to just above Nelsonville and The Coffee Cup. Some pretty good stuff, including chocolate-chip pancakes.

RE: Cauliflower (MsCuisine)

quote:

Yes, welcome. The Plains? Steamed cauliflower would sit on the steam table until it turned into mush. If we mixed in a #10 can of cheese with it, some soldiers would choose it but there was a lot of plate waste when they figured out what the vegetable was in there. But French Fried Cauliflower went over heartily and we often had a hard time getting enough made. We used frozen cauliflower--set out overnight in the walk-in until it thawed. Then the florets were dried and excess water removed. Afterwards, it was dipped in an egg and milk wash, followed by a dredge in flour with parmesean cheese and salt and black pepper. Spread out on baking sheets to "Set" the breading and then simply fried in a french fry basket in a deep-fat fryer until they floated. Took about a minute or so since the unfrozen vegetable was already soft. Then we would take a line pan with a slotted liner in it and with using this method were able to keep plenty on hand in the hot-boxes.

I really enjoy reading the posts here, but I've been mostly a lurker so far. Hope to start discussing food issues with all of you.

Brenda Tancayo
The Plains,Ohio

RE: Cauliflower (Sundancer7)

I have been on the semi Atkins diet for several years. Never tried it, but heard fried parsley was good too. There wasn't much to the mixture the veggies were coated in if I recall, just equal parts of flour and seasoned breadcrumbs, garlic salt, and a little cajun seasoning. Then everyone discovered cholesteral....

RE: Cauliflower (dreamzpainter)

after a long hospital stay and finally having my jaws unwired I went on a rampage of eating foods Id been craving. Make your batter, (bisquik works great) dip the entire cauliflower into the batter and fry in a vegetable oil in either a pan or a fry daddy fryer.
