My family moved there in 1971 when I was 4. You could buy half gallons in the stores, and also tour the Carnation factory. It was something you did on field trips in preschool or elementary school. The half gallons were cylindrical in shape, not rectangular boxes. Red and white colored.

RE: Carnation Ice Cream (enginecapt)

That's the very BR we'd drive down to from South Inglewood in the fifties and early sixties Al. What a small world. We were only 20 blocks north. I always ordered the pistachio or the peppermint stick. Nowadays it's the mocha coffee flavor and peanut butter chocolate, always in a bowl together. No more cones for me because I'm sporting something I couldn't manage to grow back in those long gone days..... a full beard.

RE: Carnation Ice Cream (mayor al)

My Ice Cream Memory only reaches back to the early 1950's in SoCal. My folks would buy a quart of Foster Freeze for a Sunday treat now and then. The Save-On Drugs had an ice cream counter up front (like Thrifty Drugs did before "rite-aid"!). They served Carnation ice Cream. Single scoop for a nickel and double for a dime. English Toffee, Burgandy Cherry, or Peppermint stick were my favorites. I recall a chest freezer beside the 'cone scooping area' that was full of half-gallons of various flavor (factory packs). However in 1958 we had a Baskin Robins open up on Crenshaw at 138th St. The hand packed pints and quarts were in great demand. I do remember having a birthday party for which my mom got a 3 gallon tube of BR ice cream and my friends and I ate every bit of it ! At BR "Pink Grapefruit Ice" was my absolute favorite flavor ever !!

RE: Carnation Ice Cream (iqdiva)

I sometimes make my cooked custard ice creams with Carnation evaporated milk...

RE: Carnation Ice Cream (John B)

I remember Carnation ice cream when I was a kid in Beaumont, Texas in the 1950's.
