However, the service provided at many franchises is absolutely appalling. Rude, slow and inaccurate is the order of the day at many Popeye's locations, so buyer beware.

RE: Popeyes Coming to Des Moines (John A)

Nice thing about Popeyes is they do not charge extra for white meat, at least our local one does not.

John

RE: Popeyes Coming to Des Moines (Phildelmar)

This thread sort of led me back, after a long absence, and, admittedly, my experience in Maryland was much different than that in North Philadelphia.
That said, when I went today, I was thinking more about the sides than the chicken.

RE: Popeyes Coming to Des Moines (trayguy)

congratulations Barney . Great stuff"

Than I realized that I haven't had Popeye's chicken in over ten years. At the time it was great stuff, the chicken was great and I loved the 'dirty' rice. But at the time, KFC was still pretty darn good too. I definitely preferred Popeyes for chain chicken.

I wish I could try Popeyes now. KFC has gone into the toilet, hence my dilemma.

I hope your Popeye's is still making things the way they used to, if so, you're in luck. If they've followed KFC, your gonna be disappointed.

Maybe this would have been better in a KFC bashing thread?

Anywho, hopefully Popeyes is still making great stuff. Don't ignore the Mom and Pops if you have them around, however.

Good luck,

Dave
RE: Popeyes Coming to Des Moines (xannie_01)

the one thing i can say about popeye's here in albuquerque is that everything is fresh because that place is constantly BUSY.

RE: Popeyes Coming to Des Moines (caver)

I agree, Col. Sanders is probably rolling in his grave. Got what I believe they called 'rotisserie' chicken at Kentucky Fried a couple years ago, that was some of the nastiest stuff I've ever deliberately put in my mouth. Their fried chicken has been rather greasy and not big on flavor. Lees or Popeyes if I can't make the drive to Princes.

Popeyes here in Nashville is usually pretty good, the spiciness seems to vary I suppose depending on who is in the kitchen. The best Popeyes I had was at one in Panama City FL. It's huge for a chicken joint with a big buffet. The chicken was excellent, and the gravy was great, even spicier than the chicken.

RE: Popeyes Coming to Des Moines (startrooper00)

I have to admit that I love Popeye's chicken. It is far better than KFC in my opinion. I just miss the Bojangles that we used to have in Kentucky about 4 years ago. I used to travel 2 hours just to eat there. I don't know, it just seemed to be the best chicken that I have ever had.

RE: Popeyes Coming to Des Moines (Phildelmar)

First experienced Popeyes when I was living and working in North Philly, and the staff's lack of training and transience made it a pretty poor meal.
However, the ones in Maryland really do a fine job with both chicken and sides..especially the dirty rice

RE: Popeyes Coming to Des Moines (dadetigl)

I went to college in New Orleans in the early 70's an used to frequent what may have been the original NO Popeye's franchise at Washington and Broad St.. 4 pieces, spicy, with dirty rice was the best. It was so spicy, it would make your head sweat. Delicious. It was in a college student's budget. New Orleans was, and still is, a great place to eat, but back then when we would go to the French Quarter, there was usually no money left for food after we had drinks.:-) We pretty much lived off Camellia Grill, Bud's Broiler, po-boys at Domilese's and Acey's Pool Hall AND Popeye's. My metabolism was higher in those days.
We live in FL now and have noticed that Popeye's has toned down the spicy. Too bad. I miss the head sweats. I still think it is better than all of the other Fried chicken chains and usually stop in at least once a month. I also miss the chicken tacos.
As I have grown older I have found a new benefit for eating Popeye's Fried Chicken. It is the MOST delicious remedy for constipation. Several pieces at dinner will have clean as a whistle by the following morning. Works for me, but I don't see it as becoming a major selling point.

RE: Popeyes Coming to Des Moines (ken8038)

I agree with those who say it depends on location. Years ago I used to work near the one on 42nd street in NY city and it was great. Lots of turnover on the food and on-the-ball servers. I used to live a block from one when I was in college that was in an awful neighborhood. The Church's chicken across the street has bulletproof glass you have to order through. The one I live by now, is also not in the best neighborhood. It is by a couple of kind of scary bars, so at any time of the day drunks stumble in. It's great entertainment.

I actually stopped there yesterday and got the correct order. Unfortunately the only one in Richmond is in a scary part of town--there used to be one a couple of miles from my house but it was shut down, a loss I still mourn. But since I go up and down I-95 every five or six weeks I make a habit of stopping at the Popeye's in Stafford, VA on my way home to get in my monthly dose of fat, grease, salt, starch and sugar, otherwise known as a 2-piece meal with fries (batter-dipped, which I'm a sucker for), slaw, a biscuit and a big Mr. Pibb. And then I go to the gym.

RE: Popeyes Coming to Des Moines (Scorereader)

I love the fact that the take out places in DC will actually advertise "Popeyes Style" fried chicken on their menu. Last year they built one less than a mile from my apartment. It's even on my way home. I will admit their drive thru service stinks. Someday, I am going to drive up to the speaker and say "I have 8 bucks, just give me some food in a box." No matter what I order, I never get the right thing. Usually, I end up way ahead with extra sides or extra spicy strips, but sometimes I get the wrong sides. It's worth it, though, because I love their mac and cheese and collard greens!

RE: Popeyes Coming to Des Moines (WingLover)

Love the spicy chicken at Popeyes - and love their mashed potatoes & gravy, too.
