I make my own mincemeat useing my grandmothers recipe which had been handed down to her. I do make a large batch and it's the only thing I preserve or can because some of the ingrediants aren't avalible to me from year to year. The recipe calls for meat trimmings of wild game Deer, Bear and such. My brother inlaw is an avid hunter so the meat ingrediants qre not usually a problem besides he loves my mince meat cookies. Recipe also calls for hard cider but I substitute Brandy. Chow Jim

My mother would never have even considered using ground beef in a mincemeat pie (ugh! ). Although I don't have her recipe, this one is very close to how she made it, always using finely shredded roast beef:

It was my understanding that there hasn't been meat in mincemeat pies for 500 years. BUT a friend of mine said her mother made it with ground beef as one of the ingredients.

You're not crazy. I remember the same.
Which is why I never understood the whole mincemeat pie thing.

When I was a juvenile delinquent for a short time...or at least a juvenile delinquent wannabe, I actually remember telling a kid "I'm going to make mincemeat out of you."
He looked at me funny and then went home. I guess he didn't like mincemeat either. And that was pretty much the end of that period in my life.

I ordered mincemeat, and I'm really looking forward to it. I figured, since I have the best recipe for pecan pie from Texas Monthly a few years back, (better than any pie store would make), and since somebody else already ordered pumpkin (also very easy to make on my own), and I don't like Boston cream pie (so shoot me), I better have something I'm only likely to have once a year. That's mincemeat!

in that order.

I start with a slice of sweet potato, then pumpkin, and end with pecan.

I have to have pumpkin for Thanksgiving.. I'll eat other desserts but pumpkin is king in my book. I made the mistake one year of assuming since it was a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, pumpkin pie would be on the menu.. it was not and no one brought one.. so now, I bring my own to share.

Mincemeat can be hideous -- if made from scratch, then it is okay (at best) ... I'm for pumpkin (or sweet potato.)

I have been invited to a Thanksgiving dinner and my hostess said everybody gets their own pie. (!) I'm having trouble deciding...pumpkin or mincemeat? Or pecan? What do you think? I like rhubarb too, but not for Thanksgiving.
