I don't know if the tour is going there but a place in Johnson City, Tx was cited by Mr. Stern as the best chicken-fried steak in the country. A visit to that establishment and the LBJ ranch are on my agenda for the trip.

RE: Round Rock Donuts; RR, TX (ayersian)

Is there any way that RR can be added to the official 2008 Roadfood tour of Austin -- to balance out all the heavy entrees? The whole thing was THREE DOLLARS.

The coffee alone would have cost nearly $3 at the green sign place. I also have a co-worker who stops at the donut place that originated in Mass periodically on the way into work. I think she pays about $3.50 for the two donut combo with a coffee. Forget that the product is so inferior it is laughable, but it includes one fewer donut and a smaller coffee.

Bushie is right - the plain glazed are better than the chocolate covered. I was there on a very busy Sunday morning. They move the line through pretty quickly, though, as most folks order by the dozen so there isn't a lot of hemming and hawing over selection. The result, though, is that you are more likely to get a warm plain glazed than any of the others. The bismarck was excellent. I had only planned on ordering (and subsequently eating) two, but after waiting in line, it seemed silly not to maximize my time spent waiting by buying more! I left the bismarck until last - figuring that I might have it as an evening snack in my hotel room - but, it didn't make it. Paraphrasing the line to DeNiro in 'Goodfellas' after they whacked Tommy - "it's gone...and there was nothing I could do about it."

I am going to try to hit Top Pot and Voodoo when I head out to the west coast next week to see how they compare.

RE: Round Rock Donuts; RR, TX (Freebird T Park)

I don't even like "donuts" But Round Rocks. Nothing proprietary here. Unfortunately, I didn't know where else to set up the photo shoot (my friends at work call it 'food porn'), so you also get the roof of my rental car.

Someday, when I get better at manipulating the photos that I take, I will try to figure out a way to brighten the sky above the Round Rock water tower pic (from the blog). That grey sky is depressing, but I have used other water tower photos as wallpaper before -- nice mix of sky and something cool on the tower.

RE: Round Rock Donuts; RR, TX (rkhayles)

WOW - $30 + $63 s&h to send 4 dozen donuts to my daughter! I think I'll just take Bushie & stevekoe's advice and ship them myself. I also agree with stevekoe that I'm a bit disappointed in the current owner's involvement in this scheme. Obviously, they are connected, because there's a link on the bakery website to the delivery "service".

Granddad (Reinhold Moehring) would NEVER have even considered charging such an exorbitant amount to send his donuts (note the spelling - that's how HE spelled it!) to military personnel, considering that's a big factor to these world-famous donuts being so famous!

I guess next time I drive to SC, I'll just make a detour by Round Rock to get some myself and take them with me.

On another note about the bakery - wonder why they can't keep a 2nd location open? What happened to the Pflugerville store? Anybody know anything?

And stevekoe, thanks for the fabulous photo in your entry! It's now my wallpaper at work.

Happy donuts,
Robin Moehring Hayles

RE: Round Rock Donuts; RR, TX (The Travelin Man)

These donuts are flat out GREAT -- but, when the day comes that I spend $65 for two dozen donuts to be shipped, I will officially need my head examined. I could spend just a little bit more than that to FLY TO AUSTIN and pick them up myself!

I can also say, as a guy who has done some business over the internet and with having orders shipped, that your pricing seems obscenely excessive. I mentioned in my above post that these donuts run 45 cents a piece at their store. That is less than $6/doz. I understand a markup, but since you have no inventory of these donuts, there is no shrinkage/loss on spoilage -- so, a 150% markup seems like a lot. PLUS, shipping to my area for overnight delivery is almost $50, which based on FedEx's standard shipping rates (businesses should be able to negotiate a better rate for frequent shipments) is also marked up.

I'll tell you what -- I'll do without these donuts until the next time I am in the area. If the owner is involved in this arrangement in any way other than supplying you with donuts, then I would question their business practices, too.

RE: Round Rock Donuts; RR, TX (Doughnutter)

Wow, I'm glad I found this website, you roadfood fans have some great information.

I have some info for you, you can now get the World Famous Round Rock Donuts shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states.

The owner and myself have an agreement that we will ship (minimum 2 dozen) of these amazing little morsals to your door by the next morning.

The shipping is not the cheapest but they arrive in excellent condition along with a few tips on warming them to get them back to "Out of the fryer" condition. We been in operation for about 2 weeks and our customers so far love what they've recieved. The shipping cost will be worth it once you bite into one of these gems.

The site is:

http://www.doughnutsovernight.com

Enjoy your roadfood!!!

RE: Round Rock Donuts; RR, TX (Bushie)

quote:

As the grandaughter of the man who created the lovely yellow-gold creations, Reinhold Moehring, your comments are much appreciated!

Imagine as a kid, going to see your grandparents and before you even give them a hello, you go into the bakery and pick up a fresh hot donut with each hand...mmmmm-good! Maybe that's why I'm shaped a bit like the donuts!

I so agree about the Krispy Kreme's - just haven't seen the reason for the slave-like devotion to them. Round Rock all the way!

I'm trying to figure out a way to get them to my daughter in the Air Force who's stationed in SC - any ideas?

If you ever manage to have one left over, try slicing them horizontally and warming in a skillet with some butter - absolute heaven!

Happy eating,
Robin Moehring Hayles

Robin, I wish I'd seen this sooner! I'm a friend of Red's.

As to your question about shipping; I'd buy some late in the afternoon (ask them to make some fresh), then ship them overnight for early-morning delivery. (Go to a mail/packaging store beforehand to find out the best way to package them.) Won't be as good as when they are still warm, but they'll STILL be better than Krispy Kreme!

Hope you check back and see this, and please continue to post as a Roadfood member.

RE: Round Rock Donuts; RR, TX (rkhayles)

As the grandaughter of the man who created the lovely yellow-gold creations, Reinhold Moehring, your comments are much appreciated!

Imagine as a kid, going to see your grandparents and before you even give them a hello, you go into the bakery and pick up a fresh hot donut with each hand...mmmmm-good! I am pretty sure that Round Rock Donuts were the best donuts that I have ever eaten. I will preface that with the notion that I am not a huge donut guy -- I will eat them on rare occasion, but the bulk of the donuts that I have been exposed to in my life are Dunkin Donuts (which are just not the same compared to when I was a kid -- I do remember them being good) and Krispy Kreme, which I was exposed to when I dated a girl who was absolutely hooked on these dreadful things - yes, I have had them hot -- I just don't get it.

My only guess is that the original Round Rock donut is what a Krispy Kreme would be if someone at that company cared at all about quality. They look similar, but taste nothing alike.

On top of the quality of the product, the folks there were incredibly friendly -- the type of people you feel good about spending your money with.

One more tease photo....

Check out the whole post, if you like, at:http://styok.blogspot.com/2006/03/best-ninety-cents-i-ever-spent_16.html

I will tell you this - if you go, tell them that it is your first visit! You won't be disappointed! Note: This may not work for you, Bushie -- they may recognize you after a couple of visits! Thanks for the recommendation!

Steve
