I love their peppermint candy - the old fashioned, somewhat chalky texture and wonderful taste. These peppermints are ALMOST right, but not quite. They are too heavy and too solid. They are tasty and do melt fairly rapidly in my mouth, but not the same as the Air Bons of 40 years ago. Just RATS!

I find they help with my "dry mouth" syndrome, though, and I may be seeking a local supplier.

Cheerio!
Miz Erry
RE: Peppermint Balls (Miz Erry)

Check out the russell stover site and search for: PRODUCT& itemID=2881
These look like they are the old-fashioned Russell Stover Air-Bons. I THINK these are similar to the ones made by Whitman's. I've just checked Vermont Country Store and they don't have them. I remember the Whitman's as coming in a can that you used a key to open. The package design was with green and white stripes and pictures of the Air Bons on it. Interestingly, Russell Stover, Whitman's and Pangborn's were all owned by the same company, so this has a strong possibility of being the right stuff. I'm ordering a package to see if it is "right." If so, I'll let y'all know!
Miz Erry
RE: Peppermint Balls (Foodbme)

Here Ya Go! 3rd row down:
They have a ton of Retro candies!
http://www.groovycandies.com/pc/viewCategories.asp?SFID=9&SFNAME=Unwrapped&SFVID=40&SFVALUE=Mints&SFCount=0&page=0&pageStyle=h&idcategory=31&VS9=0
Re:Peppermint Balls (atozharris)

Hello. I think you are talking about "Mint Bubblets" made by Elmer's in New Orleans. They were definitely around during the early 1950's. Let me know what you think. Alison
Re:Peppermint Balls (cjones5)

I know exactly what you guys are talking about. I remember growing up having these at my grandmother's house down south. My mother loved them as well. Well for Christmas I was hunting for these peppermints because I wanted to surprise my mom... Well no luck of the original Air Bons because they no longer make them.. but I found something VERY similar. Well they are by Russell Stover and they are new. Go to the Russell Stover website and type in peppermint puffs. I purchased 5 bags for my mom and she loves them!!! So I would have to disagree with mousefx.. I think they are really good. Yes, they aren't the original, but they are sooooo close. We have tried so many different brands, but this is by far the best and closes to the original. They literally dissolve. You guys have to get them.. they are soo good!!
Re:Peppermint Balls (mousefx)

They were called Air Bons and Whitman's made them. They do not make them anymore. Just last week i saw that Russell Stover was advertising NEW Old Fashioned Air Bons. I got so excited I ordered 3 bags only to find out that they are not the same as the Air Bons I remember as a child. These new ones are similar to Bob's Sweet Stripes and not like the old Air Bons that would instantly melt in your mouth, were round and very light weight.
I was so dissapointed. They are good as far as mints go, but they are NOT the original Air Bons.
Re:Peppermint Balls (Plunderedbeauty)

have you thought of looking online for the recipe because the food networks claim which I mean claim is because I havent gone and looked that they have recipes for these candys all i remember of this candy is that it melted in your mouth to sugar like a cotton candy would 2 years ago I found some sites for these candies I saved them into my favorites but then I had to swipe my computer clean but I saw williams-sonoma, washburns and the pennslyvania dutch candy company had those peppermints but are expensive also saw the candy you described sundancer on williams-sonoma
RE: Peppermint Balls (Plunderedbeauty)

i was looking through here to get those airy peppermint puffs that are airy and sugary goodness I read your post and I can to the candy I think you were posting about hun

Light, Airy, Melt-in-Your-Mouth Puff Candy Looks like a Sponge, Tastes like Heaven

If this candy had to live on looks alone, it wouldn't get far. One taste, however, and you could be addicted. Old-fashioned puff candy is a light, airy molasses-flavored candy that looks kind of like a sponge, but tastes like heaven. Crunchy when you first bite into it, it quickly melts in your mouth like cotton candy. 5 oz. bag.
from the vermont candy company also I found it on nextag.com
Re:Peppermint Balls (Sundancer7)

My father was a school teacher and while he was principal, one of his students brought him some butter flavored peppermint balls. They were excellent and they would melt in your mouth. I have never ever had anything like them. The lady that made them would not give us the recipe. I wish I had it.

That was 50 years ago.

Papaw Smith passed on about 22 years ago. I sincerely miss him.

Paul E. My boyfriend used to tell me the candy was like an imaginary friend that only I could remember! I finally did find an older lady that owns a candy store here in town and she remembers them. Unfortunately, she says they were discontinued because of problems with the elderly and children inhaling the entire ball and choking because they were so light. I was so disappointed, so if any of you find this isn't the case, please let me know.

Re:Peppermint Balls (nostalgicfoodguy)

I remember these 'Air Bons' type of candy too, and I loved them. I remember them being around in the 1960's and 70's, even occasionally in the 1980's. The last time I ever saw them was at a K-Mart about 1991. They were in cellophane bags hanging on a plastic strip at the front register. The red (peppermint) ones were my least favorite flavor, I liked the green ones (spearmint) much better but my favorites were the caramel colored ones-butterscotch! (and I don't even like any other kind of butterscotch candy).

It's been nearly 20 years now and I have never seen them since. The 'Bobs Sweet Stripes' and other peppermint balls people have shown on this thread are NOT at all the right kind of candy. "Bob's" style of mints are solid all the way through, these air bons were almost all hollow in the middle with just a few sugary strands that dissolved instantly on the tounge. (It's possible though, one of the peppermint puffs type of candy MIGHT be the correct one. It's extremely hard to tell since they look almost identical.)

Re:Peppermint Balls (ChicagoIrish)

I too loved these mints and have been looking for them as well. Not sure if these are the same, but they do look very similar...

http://www.candywarehouse.com/mintballs.html
RE: Peppermint Balls (Cinnamom)

I've been wishing and wishing that I could find Elmer's Fruit Bubblets for AGES! Just ran across this thread after posting a 'wish I could find ...' customer request to Vermont Country Store. The peppermint ones were okay, but my brother & I just loved the fruit ones. I've often thought of them as having the approximate texture of semi-solidified cotton candy in a crunchy shell. I loved the way they just collapsed into a puddle of flavor in the mouth, but I loved to crunch them, too. I would eat so many my tongue would get sore from 'sugar burn'! I'd sure like to find these again. Oooo, butterscotch flavor sounds FABULOUS!!! Elmer;s only made fruit flavored and mint flavored. I'd settle for 'close' if that's all I could find, I guess.

RE: Peppermint Balls (MGWerks)

Bought a huge plastic tub of these individually-wrapped at Costco or a very reasonable price.
