Some rice,wasabi and soy for dipping, and then we might be talking proper sushi. Everyone knows only the wrong types of people eat that stuff on crackers.

Xannie, anyone who calls Sushi, "bait" doesn't know much about fishing. Everyone knows rice won't stay on a hook. Now sashimi is another story Fred

my husband, OF has always called sushi "bait".
and he always refers to it as "suchii" drives me crazy.
then last year while watching football, terry bradshaw said the same thing about it being bait and pronounced it like OF did. that's when i added terry bradshaw to the Old Fart list

I've been in sashimi/sushi places in Japan where they have live fish and squid and stuff in tanks; as you order, they pull them out and dice them up whole, the fish still on the bone; plate them and put them on the table. The food is still moving as you eat; autonomic movements, the seafood reacts to touch. Yes, it wriggles in your chopsticks.

The same with Korean hotplate bbq; octopus and such is cut up but still moving. Lots of Chinese seafood restaurants, even in the US, have live tanks of fish, shrimp, etc., that they net out and cook as you watch.

Not much question about fresh. Defintely not a ploy, but an established tradition. And expensive. And a little more sophisticated than shiners and minnows.

There is a sushi bar I've gone to several times where the shrimp for the sweet shrimp are alive when they prepare them. Maybe not wriggling in my chopsticks-----but they definitely wriggle as the sushi chef takes them out in front of you to prepare them!

Looks like a marketing ploy, like "Garbanzo" instead of "Chick Pea" or "Baby Portabella" instead of "Crimini." Hey, this ain't just fresh fish, it's live Sushi!

Kind of reminds me of a roadside place near college that advertised, "For Sale, Bunnies and Rabbits." We had to explain the difference to a roommate from Chicago.
