(mattie405)

Have to say it was the Patsys up on 117-118th on First Ave in Manhattan, before it was sold in the mid 90's, still decent but not the same. There was another one up on Second Ave by the bus stop on 116th, I can't remember the name now but it disappeared in the late 1960's, it had a very distinctive taste, another was by the arcade and rides out in Staten Island by South Beach. They were what we grew up on in NYC in the 50's and none I have ever had all over in my travels have ever compared to them. I think it is what you grow up on that forms your opinion of "Best", if you enjoyed it than usually none will ever compare to it.

RE: The Best Pizza You Ever Ate! (bbires)

I've got to give some props to southern pizza. Pepe's (now defunct) in Venice, Fla. is the best I've ever had--it's how I imagined NY pizza to be, but it turned out to be better. Mama Leone's, in the same city, is also very, very good, though not as classic New York. Here in Chattanooga, our own Lupi's makes an exceptional pie, and I'll through in a + for ambience. Unlike the cramped John's Pizza in NYC, it's fun to hang out for an extended time at Lupi's, drink a Foster's on draft, have a great salad or bruschetta as well.

All over the south, there is exceptional pizza. Mellow Mushroom, though, is too doughy. If I want a loaf of bread, I'll make one.

RE: The Best Pizza You Ever Ate! I'm not sure I'd declare it the best pie I've ever had, but it was certainly among the best. I had the clam pie. It had just a light sprinkling of cheese; about as little as you'll see short of a flat out tomato pie. But the crust (very thin with some black in spots, but raised considerably around the edge) and sauce were tremendous, and the Cherrystone clams were tasty too.

RE: The Best Pizza You Ever Ate! (A sausage and then years later a clam pie).

The best square pizzas have all come from my hometown area. Ghigiarelli's in Old Forge, PA (crispy crust with perfect blend of tomato and onion), the now defunct Gabello's in Duryea (similar but with a seasoned kick) and the aforementioned Pizza Perfect (oily with cheese and onion) in Trucksville.

While I'm on subject here, let me state that a friend and I visited New Haven about a month ago and were both thoroughly disappointed with the Clam Pie at Pepe's. The pie was overcooked and the clams were dry. I know they say they only use fresh clams, but I'm thinking these could've been canned. Maybe since they are NOW open all day, they are cutting corners? Sure hope not.

RE: The Best Pizza You Ever Ate! My parents always got a large hand-tossed with everything, and I loved it: would have left-overs the next day for breakfast, which drove the food police at my elementary school nuts!

My favorite, I think, was the kind I made at a chain where I was employed, and could make it exactly the way I wanted. House-made Italian sausage, fresh onions, and mozzarella, easy on the (house-made) sauce, and cooked really crispy. Not sophisticated, and the crust (from the home office) was nothing to write home about, but I loved it and can't find anybody to make one the same way for me.

RE: The Best Pizza You Ever Ate!
