I find both Pat's and Genos to be for tourists, and that both places are cruising on reputation. I agree with those who favor steve's or Chinks. also, Olivieris in Reading terminal market. as a side note, I like the overall quality in the market. I feel that the level of competition is so high that bad product can't survive there, at least not for long

My wife made the mistake of getting hers with provolone, and it was like eating a sammich at the beach when sand gets in it.

You're right about the hoagie/sub thing. It should never be called a hoagie. It is a sub So by your definition nothing on a round roll, or any kind of roll for that matter, would be a sandwich. Sandwiches would only be made with sliced bread. While I respect your opinion I can't agree with it. To me if it's on a bread or roll it makes no difference. It is still a sandwich.

It is the two slices of bread thing. Peanut butter and jelly. BLT. Bologna, lettuce and mayonnaise. These are sandwiches. Three slices of bread as in a "Club" is also a sandwich. I haven't decided whether something in pita is a sandwich. Probably not.

It is not just a Philadelphia thing, though that always works in my favor. Even when I lived in Stevens Point, Wisconsin I did not consider a hot dog or a hamburger to be a sandwich.

One final Philadelphia thing. Please do not use hoagie and sub in the same sentence.

Just did a comparison with my Daughter at Pat's and Geno's. Split a Wiz wit at both places....Geno's was the winner!

More emotional, than anything else. Just as I don't consider a hot dog or a hamburger to be a sandwich, I don't think a cheesesteak is a sandwich. A hoagie may be a sandwich, though not really. But a cheesesteak is a cheesesteak, not a sandwich.

I remember about 20 years ago my former in-laws coming to visit us here in Jersey. We're out to eat someplace I can't remember, but what I do remember is the mother-in-law (bless her, she's still alive, but still...) she says, "I'd like to order a Philadelphia Cheesesteak Sandwich!" Did I want to crawl under the table or the car or what.

And you can trust me when I tell you I do remember it was not at Pat's or GENO's.

I wonder if the original poster ever recovered from that Pat's steak two years ago.

Went to Pat's this week. A fun experience. He's made ordering sandwiches easier by posting a sign out front which tells you what to ask for.
Gino's across the street looked like a neat place as well but only room for one of those monsters.

Do jaw exercises before you go ... Pat's meat (and Geno's) is about 4-6 months old. Be prepared for 'tude from the "help" ... as in ignoring you if they are in the middle of some inane conversation. Be ready to fork over six bucks. And if you order a pork with red sauce, be prepared for comments about how odd your taste is because NO ONE ever puts pork bones in spaghetti sauce. Or .. call a decent pizza place and get a better steak without the B.S.

I remember Gino's too! Wasn't one of the owners a former Baltimore Colt player? Gino's was the place to go (they had several stores in DE).
