While this is certainly the close rather than the beginning of the watermelon season, I thought of this forum this evening while visiting friends in a nearby town and admiring the last of their watermelon crop this year, particularly their 4 giant melons. While well shy of the world's record 262 lb., their four biggies weighed 157, 183, 202, and 209 lbs. and were sights to behold (largest was 34" long and 59" in circumference). While I have always doubted that melons this size would be good to eat (even with these all being perfectly formed rather than ill shaped as giant melons are at times), they had enough delicious "regular" melons which we enjoyed in sufficient quantity to guarantee a night of much interrupted sleep.

Pretty soon we'll be able to get "Hand Melons" by driving up to the Saratoga area. A Hand melon is a cantalope grown on the Hand family farm near Albany. It is the worlds best cantalope - bar none. It s worth a cross country trip in August to go to the Capitol district and find yourself a Hand melon.

Anyone interested in the subject of watermelons might enjoy the website www.melonman.com. Saw three of his prize winning melons on display late last summer. At their sizes, I'm sure they were no good for eating, but figured anyone who could grow melons that size for contests and displays likely could grow some pretty good eating ones. Anyway, his website can be rather interesting to anyone with an interest in/appreciation of watermelons.

Everyone knows watermelon seeds will germinate in your belly if you swallow them- thus the spitting contests!
