They were and still are, the lightest, most delish donuts ever made. They were three times the size of a crispy cream and you could almost get a whole one in your mouth at once. Many days I skiped lunch and went to the Spudnut shop and blew my money on the large delish punctured orbs called Spudnuts. They were never greasy, allways light and sweet and if you could catch them hot out of the fryer, you were the closest you could get on earth to heaven.
i live in Bastrop Texas and would like to know if there are any shops close to Austin.
There goes my diet.
Re:Spudnut Shop (NascarDad)

I need to find the one in Charlottesville one of these days.
Re:Spudnut Shop (amurillo1982)

well there is a spudnuts shop for sell in amarillo tx that has been around since i was a little one i guess the guy just wants out of it but he is still running the busness till it sells. i just love them and wished i had the money to take it over

RE: Spudnut Shop (suzanna16)

I remember the Spudnut Shop in Johnstown. It was on Broad Street in Cambria City, rt 403..the people that owned it went to my church...OMG they were soooo good. I do not care for reg donuts, but Spudnuts now thats different. I think someone should set a booth up for them at the Folk Fest here each year. There is no place close here now that I know of that makes them, even if there was I doubt they would be the same. Nice to hear from someone that remembers how great they were.

RE: Spudnut Shop (Legran22)

Spudnuts! Now that a blast from the past. When I was a kid growing up in Midland, Texas in the 50's there was a Spudnut Shop and the owner went to our church and would bring Spudnuts to Sunday School. I went to many a sermon with a chocolate mustache. They also had a delivery wagon, kind of like the ice cream man used to do, where they would drive down your street slowly ringing a bell and everyone would run out to the street to buy a Spudnut. I remember them as being delicious.

RE: Spudnut Shop (ralph)

I started a Spudnut Shop in Miami, OK in 1965 approx. It was a Franchise out of Salt Lake City, UT. I purchased the equipment in Amarila TX. I had a trainer come from the home office. He work with me about two weeks before we had our Grand Opening. It was next door two a new QuickTrip Store. We made all the products including the cake Spuddies also made a fried pie.
It was a wonderful product, I was not aware that the Franchise no longer exists. Where do the shop buy there mix ? It was always more costly than the Daylight shops that were Franchised out of Tulsa, OK and the flour was made in Tulsa.
I have some pictures of my shop if I new where send them. My business card look like a Spudnut.

Thanks
RE: Spudnut Shop (CajunKing)

SPUDNUTS IN THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE STILL LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2808 WEST 23rd Street, Panama City, FL
Not Open On Mondays

RE: Spudnut Shop (Twinwillow)

During the mid 60's, I travelled the the northwest on business. What memories! I grew up Charlottesville, VA. One of my best friends was Rhonda. Her dad owned (still owns? idk) that Spudnut Shop. It's incredible to see a picture of their shop. Those spudnuts were the best! Of course, it didn't hurt that I had a crush on the owner's daughter.
quote:

Spudnut shop in Charlottesville,VA:

RE: Spudnut Shop (CajunKing)

quote:

whr can I get some spudnuts?

http://spudnutshop.com/

CA has the most Spudnuts left that are open

RE: Spudnut Shop (blubird106)

I remember the one on Broadway in Boulder, Colorado in the 50's. I grew up in Farmington, New Mexico and there was a Spudnut Shop there in 1951 when we arrived. I left Farmington, and moved to Georgia, in 1982 - and the Spudnut Shop was still operating. The Jolley family owned it that whole time.

I grew up in Farmington, too. I don't believe the Spudnut business was owned by Mormons, but a lot of franchises were. I happen to be working on a potato flour recipe for spudnuts to serve in a coffeehouse I now own. Let me tell ya, Mr.Jolley earned every penny. I remember him flippin' those 'nuts over a hot fryer back in the '60s when I was at Tibbets Jr High. It had to be a tough job. I'm close to getting it right, but am amazed at how precise taste memory can be 38 or 40 years after the fact. I'm using Maplette to flavor the glaze which may be too refined. I suspect one of the secrets was the use of more available ingredients and lower cost ones. We'll keep testing.

RE: Spudnut Shop (Twinwillow)

OMG! She and her husband Harold "Babe" owned the spudnut shop in Lethbridge Alberta Canada. They sold the shop to Wolfgang Otto in the late forties. The shop still has the spudnut name on it, but they now sell fancy cakes and desserts. On Tuesdays and Thursdays Wolfgang comes into the shop and whips up a batch of spudnuts. We took Yvonne and my kids there last Tuesday (7/3/2007) and enjoyed a dozen spudnuts. They are best eaten when fresh and warm...

There were two spudnut shops in Logan Utah where I was raised. Pete's and Blake's Spudnut. I would visit Pete's on a regular basis while out on my paper route, or walking home from Church. They also made great burgers, shakes, and fries.

RE: Spudnut Shop (CajunKing)

Kaylalura,

Try calling one of the stores listed on the spudnut site and ask them about franchising.

RE: Spudnut Shop (El Dorado Spud)

I've had Spudnuts from both El Dorado and Magnolia this week. I realize some folks don't like them, like I can't stand seafood. Maybe it's a tastebud issue, maybe it's just preference - but most people greatly prefer Spudnuts over doughnuts. Might as well make them with Pla-Doh. KK is just nasty.

I have a friend who only likes them refrigerated, which is probably the weirdest preference I know of.
