I was very sad to see that they went out of business many years ago, and overjoyed upon their return. One of the things that sets these subs apart is the incredible seasoning infused in the oil....each type of sandwich has a different mix of seasonings. This is something that no other sub chain has, or probably ever will. When you are devouring one of their subs, take note on how perfectly the seasoning matches the meat. I now live in Illinois and will soon make a road trip to once again savor that incredible flavor.

RE: Suburpia - More than memories (JRPfeff)

sdzn - I love your story. I don't get this far east very often any more, my husband moved me out past Oconomowoc (closer to Johnson Creek). I recall the Suburpia on 27th & Oklahoma and at Summerfest, back in the day.
I just devoured a Miles Standish, I don't remember enjoying a sub so much. Soooooo Good! I got off work early a day later and had to get another, the next day I did it again when I was told there was one in Waukesha. Thank goodness the gas was killing me. I've had to get one - about 6 times in the course of a week and a half. Waukesha is getting pretty far for me too...I don't know if I can feed my new addiction with gas going up so much. Are there any plans for an Oconomowoc (Growing fast) or Johnson Creek (no subs in creek) location.
If anyone knows what the sauce is, I'd appreciate it so I can make do in the mean time.

RE: Suburpia - More than memories (ann peeples)

www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/stories/2005/08/29/story5.html - 109k -

RE: Suburpia - More than memories (Meggy)

I know more about Suburpia than I want to. This is the third incarnation of the business, always run by the same man who is a criminal. The delays are due to his involvement. He may have thought up a good sandwich...for the 70's when no one cared what went into their bodies...but he's a crazy man that doesn't pay his vendors and relies on his own lunacy for direction. He treats his employees like crap, by the way. While I am all for independent, locally owned businesses...there is something to be said for integrity and this business has none.

The food prep area is intentionally hidden from sight. I am certain there are a number of reasons why! Some things repeatedly fail for good reason. Try and ask for nutritional information, by the way. I did and got laughed at.

RE: Suburpia - More than memories (vclamp)

Thanks. THe intial opening schedule of March got bumped back because the city made them rearrange the customer traffic flow. The work is completed. It has been ready to open now for several months. They did get the small sign out front. but it looks too small to be genuinely permanent. It was political problems, not business that caused them to shut down in the past. The current problems are apparently now governmental as well.

A Chubbies has opened 2 blocks west of Prospect, and a Whole Foods is where the former Gold Coast was, so there is more competition now than when it was supposed to open.

I do remember the old Gold Coast by North Ave & Prospect Ave from the early 80's until around 2000 perhaps. Extrememly similar, but Suburpia is a bit better. The Gold Coast at 5901 W Burnham is the one that I have been to most recently.

RE: Suburpia - More than memories (Lcky7eleven)

Thanks Yada, I do remember that sub-shop being a Gold Coast now that you mention it.

RE: Suburpia - More than memories (Yada123)

quote:

David are you thinking about the old sub-shop by "The Globe" on North Ave? I don't remember the name of it, but I didn't think it was a Suburpia. I could be wrong though as it went out of business a while ago. There is a new Suburpia that has been in the works now for about 6 months where the old Soup Bros used to be. Thats what I was talking about in my earlier post.

The one he is refering to was originally a Suburpia before the chain went bankrupt. It then became a Gold Coast which run by the original owner's right-hand man. The subs at Gold Coast are exactly the same. There is one on Burnham and about 35th.

RE: Suburpia - More than memories (Lcky7eleven)

David are you thinking about the old sub-shop by "The Globe" on North Ave? You entered into an anteroom that had a menu and an order counter BUT the other side of the counter was an alcove blocking your view of the food prep area. And the alcove blocked any view of the waiting room. Which meant you had to hope some employee might take the time to wander into the alcove and see if there was a customer there. Yelling "HELLO?" never helped, suggesting a sound barrier was also in place.

The Suburpia in the Plankinton building was even stranger. Again, customer sight lines were blocked by an alcove. The windows were covered in floor-length blinds. Once the blinds were open just a bit around twilight, enabling me to peek inside. What I saw was a bunch of folding tables and computers, not a food prep area. And once when a Plankinton Bldg security guard and I were tramping along the fire steps to the rear of the Suburpia, trying to track down a leak that was threatening my bookshop's basement, the presumed manager of the Suburpia cracked opened his firedoor just wide enough to yell at us to get away from his store.
That store took months to open. Once it did so, the customer flow was maybe a couple people a day, if that. Very strange.

RE: Suburpia - More than memories (Yada123)

quote:

They Finally put a sign up above the Suburpia in progress at the corner of North and Prospect.
